Poverty is one of the main causes that led to the impoverished living conditions in Darfur. Because of this looming problem, people of Darfur and the Sudanese government were forced to clash with one another resulting to hostility, violence and segregation.

The civil war has been noted as one of the worst events in the history of the 21st century wherein hundreds of thousands of people have shed their bled by means of genocide.Among the many victims of the Janjaweed, the militia arm of the Sudanese government, the Darfuri women suffered the most. Almost 20% females were subjected to gender-based violence. Women of all ages from young children to aging elderly suffered from physical, psychological, emotional, social and spiritual abuse. Due to these horrific experiences, a significant number of women have developed depression, post traumatic disorders, prosecution, social isolation and the feeling of shame or inferiority to others. As a consequence, women who have been raped find it hard to reintegrate to society as well as to recuperate from their dark past because of the stigma attached to the victims of rape.

Many of them are looked upon differently; some with disgust while others with indifference. In Darfur, chastity is greatly valued particularly by women. So when this is exploited or taken away from them, an individual cannot help herself but be devastated about the unpleasant event that she endured. It is because of the circumstances that international organizations are initiating an effort to classify rape as a war crime or crime against humanity because it serve as an instrument to inflict terror and genocide. For the Darfuri women, it is hard for them to address the issue of rape on a local level because the actors involved in doing the heinous act are people from the government so they need to take their concerns into an international platform in order for justice to be served.
