Paul Warfield Tibbets Jr. , who dropped the atomic bomb died in 2007. However, the dispute of his action continues and the atomic bomb does not disappear with his death.
The main argument people are talking about is that whether it is a right decision for the us to use atomic weapons on japan to end World War 2. It is true that the atomic bomb totally destroyed two cities of Japan, causing millions of civilians dead directly. Moreover, the nuclear radiation is still influencing the health of the people in the two cities. The whole world was shocked with the first use of nuclear power, including the US itself. Many humanrights groups strongly blame that this action is cruel and inhuman because they believe the war was held by the militarists not the civilians so that the innocent should not be responsible for the war.
While the opponents think that the drop of bomb was right, since it ended the war much earlier, preventing more people from being murdered by the kamikaze Japanese soldiers and alarmed the world the danger of the using of the atomic bomb. That is the reason why no nuclear bomb has been dropped after then though most countries own nuclear weapons.According to the dropping of the atomic bomb helped to end the war quickly after the surrender of Germany and Italy, the main fascist powers in Europe, saved the Asian countries which were still fighting with the stubborn Japan and, to some extent, had kept the world at peace since then, especially in the fields of using nuclear weapons, the US made the right decision to use atomic weapons on Japan. The dropping of the atomic bomb accelerated the surrender of Japan, letting the Japanese civilians realize that their country would never win the war which pressed the Japanese imperial government and Japanese emperor to surrender.During World War 2, most Japanese young people and Japanese soldiers were brain washed by the Emperor of Japan.
They believed that their emperor was God and everything he ordered was right and should be carried out; therefore died for the emperor and they thought that dying for Japan and the Japanese emperor was a virtue. Even if American soldiers arrived in Okinawa, the emperor would have still told his army that they would win the awar soon and they would conquer the whole world. The reason why Japanese soldiers and the civilians trusted their emperor without any doubt at that time because the spirit of “Yamato Damashii”, “a word was often used in World War Two by the Japanese imperial army to mean fighting spirit(of Japan) in order to motivate their fighting forces” (xx). This spirit was interpreted by the Japanese imperial government to their soldiers that they should not be afraid to sacrifice for their country and it was a great honor for them to fight for their country.Among the soldiers they respected the person who has such guts. That’s why that at that time it was very difficult for Japanese people to confess their defeating by others.
The surrender of European fascists did not cause the horror to prevent Japan still fighting. On the contrary, the Japanese emperor announced that the Japanese were not afraid to fight within their country and they would fight on until the last Japanese one dies. The announcement indicated that the Japanese military and their emperor still believed that they had the chance to win the war.The domestic Japanese still had the faith that they were undefeatable until they knew the strength gap and the atomic bombs’ power. Donohue Nathan writes, “Nicknamed Little Boy, the bomb with a power of over 20,000 tons of TNT destroyed most of Hiroshima, Killing an estimated 130,000people.
Three days later on August 9, a second bomb nicknamed Fat Man was dropped on the Japanese city of Nagasaki destroying most of Nagasaki and killing roughly between 60,000-70,000 people. Six days after the bombing of Nagasaki, Japan surrendered, making the end of World War Two” (Donohue).
