The Jamuna River (Bangla: ????? Jomuna) is one of the three main rivers of Bangladesh. It is the main channel of the Brahmaputra River when it flows out of India into Bangladesh. The Jamuna flows south, ending its independent existence as it joins the Padma River (Pôdda) near Goalundo Ghat.
Merged with the Padma (Pôdda), it meets the Meghna River near Chandpur. Its waters then flow into the Bay of Bengal as the Meghna River.[1]The river's average depth is 395 feet (120 m) and maximum depth is 1,088 feet (332 m).[citation needed]The Jamuna was a barrier in establishing a direct road link between capital Dhaka and northern part of Bangladesh better known as Rajshahi Division until 1996.
This was mitigated by the completion of the Jamuna Multi-Purpose Bridge.[2] The Jamuna is a braded stream characterised by a network of interlacing channels with numerous sandbars enclosed in between them. The sandbars, known in the Bengali as chars do not, however, occupy a permanent position. The river deposits them in one year very often to destroy and redeposit them in the next rainy season. The process of derposition erosion and redeposition has been going on continuously making it difficult to precisely demarcate the boundary between the district of Pabna on one side and the district of Mymensingh Tangail and Dhaka on the other. Breaking of a char or the emergence of a new one is also a cause of much violence and litigation.
The Jamuna is a very wide river. During the rains it is about 5-8 miles from bank to bank. Even during the dry season when the waters subside, the breadth is hardly less than 2-3 miles. The Jamuna is a very important waterway. It is navigable at all seasons of the year by large cargo and passenger steamers.
Before Partition passenger steamers used to ply up to Dibrugarh in the State of AssaJn in Indian Union. At present two steamer ferry services interlink the district of Pabana with the districts of Mymensingh, Tangail and Dhaka. The [[Bangladesh Railway]] maintains a forry service between Serajganj in Pabna and Jagannathganj in Mymensingh. The other ferry service between Nagarbari in Pabna and Aricha in Dhaka is run by the C ; B Department.About Jamuna RiverThe Jamuna River is the principal waterway of the Brahmaputra River when the river leaves Indian Territory and enters Bangladesh. The river runs according to a southerly itinerary, finishing its individual presence once it meets the Padma River, close to Goalundo Ghat.
Fused with the Padma River (Pôdda), the river joins the Meghna River in the vicinity of Chandpur. The River waters subsequently pour into the Bay of Bengal as the Meghna River. The river has its source in the Chemayung-Dung glacier, at a distance of 145 km from Parkha, a major commercial hub situated amid Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar. The mean depth of the Jamuna River is 120 meters (395 feet) and the maximum depth of the river is 332 meters (1,088 feet). Within the area of Bangladesh, the length of Brahmaputra-Jamuna is 276 km, of which the length of Jamuna is 205 km.
The Jamuna River was an obstacle in setting up a straight highway connection between the northern portion of Bangladesh and Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. The northern portion of Bangladesh is popularly known as the Rajshahi Division till 1996. This issue was solved by the conclusion of the Jamuna Multi-Purpose Bridge. The width of the river changes from 3 km to 18 km.
Nevertheless, the mean width is around 10 km. The four main tributaries of the river are the Dharla, the Dudhkumar, the Karatoya-Atrai, and the Tista. The river is also known as the Brahmaputra-Jamuna River. It is the second biggest river in Bangladesh. The catchment area of the river encompasses places in China, Tibet, Bangladesh and India. Essentially, it is the downriver itinerary of the Brahmaputra River, which occurred following the earthquake and devastating flood taking place in 1787.
Currently, the Brahmaputra moves toward the southeast from Bahadurabad (also known as Dewanganj upzila of Jamalpur district) and this portion of the river is known as Old Brahmaputra and the stream amid Aricha and Bahadurabad is known as the Jamuna. The entire span of the river is named as the Brahmaputra-Jamuna by the Hydrology Directorate of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB).The drainage Basin of the powerful Brahmaputra-Jamuna River is approximately 583,000 sq km of which 241,000 sq km is lying in India, 293,000 sq km in Tibet, and just 47,000 sq km is situated in Bangladesh. The catchment basin over Bahadurabad is 536,000 sq km.The river runs across the towns and cities of the Rajshahi Division of Bangladesh.
Rajshahi is one of the six administrative districts of Bangladesh. It is home to around 30 million people and has an area of approximately 34,513 km².The Rajshahi province is in the northwestern end of Bangladesh. It is surrounded by the Padma River to the south as the Jamuna is situated over the eastern boundary. In the West and North, Rajshahi district has a common boundary with India.
Jamuna BridgeJamuna Bridge is also known as Bangabandhu Bridge, Jomuna Bohumukhi Shetu, or the Jamuna Multi-Purpose Bridge. The bridge was opened in June 1998. It was an initiative to link Bhuapur, located on the east riverbanks of Jamuna with Sirajganj on the west riverbanks of the same river. It was built on the Jamuna River in Bangladesh, which is one of the three main rivers in the country and the fifth biggest in the world in terms of flow. The bridge functions as an important connection amid the eastern and western areas of the country.
The Bangabandhu Bridge offers a number of advantages for the inhabitants, and particularly, supports inter-territorial commerce in the nation. Other than fast transportation of cargo and commuter movement via train and roadways, it also helps in electricity and natural gas transmission and distribution along with installation of telecommunication connections. The Bangabandhu Bridge is situated on the Trans Asian Railway and Asian Highway, which, when completely constructed, will offer continuous global rail and roadway connections from different parts of Southeast Asia via Central Asia to Northwestern Europe. The bridge features both meter gauge and broad gauge rail tracks and there is a 4-rail dual gauge line. In addition, there are towers for high-tension lines.
The bridge is supervised by the Bangladesh Bridge Authority Limited and the overall length of the bridge is 4.8 km. The bridge is 18.5 meters wide.
