The novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time the protagonist, Christopher is autistic which creates dilemmas in his life, and the lives of the people around him. Because of Christopher’s disability he misses huge parts of his life. Christopher misses many details in his life that others can clearly see. Christopher misses that his mother never actually passed away, and she had just left Christopher and his father.Which meant the letter was posted on 16, October 1997, which was 18 months after mother had died” (Page 98).
Most people knew that his mother had left them, including his dad, but his father thought it would be better without Christopher knowing. Christopher also did not realize that his father had an affair with Mrs. Shears, even though she was always in the house, and in the same bedroom as his father he thought they were just good friends. Christopher didn’t even set his dad as one of the suspects for killing Wellington. He would’ve known that his father was one of the suspects or the killer, if he knew that his father had an affair with Mrs. Shears.
Christopher’s blocks out a lot of important details in his life, but its not done intentionally. Christopher can not interpret anything that is not real, or has not happened, and because of this anyone who lies is considered “evil” in his mind. Once Christopher found out that his father lied to him about his mother being dead he did not want to be near him.Christopher wanted to run away to his mother in London. “And then I had to decide what to do because I couldn’t live in the house with Father anymore it was dangerous” (Page 128).
But Christopher could not understand that his father only lied for the better (for Christopher). He did not want Christopher to worry, or feel bad. Christopher’s disability blocks out many important things in his life, and not only makes it difficult for himself he also makes it difficult for others.
