Entering into a homosexual relationship, just like any other relationship, is a personal choice. Each individual has the choice to choose who they love and everyone should be afforded the right to decide whom they want to engage in their life long journey with, possibly raise a family with, and be accepted in some form in society. Same sex marriage is a decision that two people make, just the same as a straight couple entering into marriage. Often times, marriage is planned and well thought out. This is no different with same-sex marriage.
Just because a couple of the same sex chooses to wed, does not mean that they do not take the sanctity of marriage seriously. Some have beliefs that because two individuals of the same sex engage in the union of marriage, that it is a threat to traditional families. Two people of the same sex are unable to procreate, thus eliminating the traditionalism of marriage. This however, is not entirely true. Two people of the same sex may not be able to procreate together, but options do exist. Same sex couples have options like adoption, egg donors, sperm donors and surrogates.
Some gay couples may even have children from previous heterosexual relationships. Procreation should not be the defining basis ones disagreement towards gay marriage because there are many outlets. The California Supreme Court agrees that even though procreation is important, that it not be the criterion that decides one’s marriage. In its four-to-three May 2008 decision on the issue, the court ruled that “[t]hus, although the state undeniably has a legitimate interest in promoting ‘responsible procreation,’ that interest cannot be viewed as a valid basis for defining or limiting the class of persons who may claim the protection of the fundamental constitutional right to marry (Newton, 2010, pg 58). ” Years ago, a “traditional family” would possibly consist of a husband, wife and children.
We all know that family dynamics are different in this day in age. Households that consist of same sex parents and gay marriage are more prevalent and more widely accepted in the United States now. People are becoming more embracing towards the idea of homosexuality and gay marriage. It is a new age and new generation, and what was foreign to a lot of people years ago, is becoming more common and socially accepted. In the article “Public Acceptance Of Same-Sex Marriage At All-Time High”, the author makes a point by saying “Over the past two decades, as public attitudes about homosexuality have become more accepting, people have come to realize that gays and lesbians don’t necessarily fit the stereotypes that they were taught to believe in, and that they’re no different than the rest of us” (Mataconis, 2011, n. p.
). There were many misconceptions and ideas that were formed about same-sex relationships. The author also goes on to say “thanks to these changing attitudes and demographic change, the social stigma against homosexuals has largely disappeared (mataconis, 2011 n. p. ).
”A new age and demographic change have made a great positive impact on same-sex relationships. People are beginning to see that there is no harm in loving someone of the same sex and choosing to live a life with them. People pass judgment for many reasons. A main reason is ignorance.
For a long time, same sex partners have had to hide their relationships in fear of being bashed socially, or physically harmed. With relationships like these becoming more acceptable, gay partners are able to show the world that there is no harm in loving a person of the same sex.We are all human; we are all intrigued by different smells, tastes, looks, colors etc. This holds true with personal and intimate relationships also.
We are all attracted to different types of people and personalities. We choose the types of friends we have. We are all drawn to certain types of people who we establish feelings of joy, happiness, intimacy and love with. Choosing a partner to love is a personal decision and a right. “For many members of this generation, the idea that two people who care about each other can’t form a legal relationship is likely a pretty foreign concept” (Mataconis, 2011, n.
p. ).The sanctity of marriage is special. Not allowing two individuals who believe this very idea to be true the right to wed, is wrong. Same sex marriage has remained a controversial topic of opinion and discussion for years, but with it becoming legal around the United States, more same sex couples are able to come out and live happy relationships under less scrutiny. Allowing same sex couples to free and open with their relationship and their marriages will create more awareness amongst us all.
The idea of same-sex marriage will continue to become more social accepted, with no harm to society.
