Our environment is endangered. The list of problems affecting our environment grows longer each day. Previously the greatest concerns were air pollution and water pollution. These days it is acid rain, forest destruction, extinction of animal species and plants and mostly global warming! Despite knowledge on the existence of these environmental problems, little effort directed to solving the problems.

However, if nothing is done to stop these problems soon even the human race will be extinct.Following this depressing realization, if I were given adequate resources to start my own environment group, my goal for the first two years would be to sensitize people on the adverse effects of environmental pollution. Specifically, I would teach on how proper waste disposal contributes to sustainable development. Sustainable development means utilizing resources in such a way that there is enough left for future generations. Schmandt defines sustainable development as one that maximizes the long-term net benefits to human kind, taking into account the costs of environmental degradation.

The benefits include income gains, reduced unemployment, healthier living conditions, and improved environment quality. (Scmandt & Ward 2000). Green corp. one of the large corporations dealing with environment protection. Their mission to teach the next generation leaders the strategies and skills needed to win tomorrow environment bottles (Green corps) The reason why I would choose to focus on waste disposal is that the issue on waste can be address simply by changing people’s attitudes.

Households produce a lot of waste every year.According to a report filed by Johan, Furedy & Baud, (2004) each household in US produced 1tonne of rubbish every year. Out of this rubbish, almost half of it is reusable. It is alarming to see track loads of supposed ‘rubbish” taken away and dumped in huge dumpsites yet majority of it could be recycled.

I would educate people that the waste thrown away is made from natural resources, which are non-renewable and if recycling does not take place, the natural resources would one day be depleted.I would employ a team of people who would train people on the various recycling options. The first step to ensuring proper waste disposal is enabling people appreciate that the environment is everyone’s responsibility and the need to protect it for future generations. Thus said, I would educate people on how their choices directly affect environment e. g. buying polystyrene bags and over packed foods, which adds to waste in the environment.

Plastic is non-biodegradable hence an environmental nuisance.Over packed goods that do not necessarily need it are similarly bad choices for environment. Simple task such as sorting out rubbish while disposing waste goes a long way to preventing waste accumulation. By sorting garbage organic waste say fruit peels, left over, tealeaves etc.

can be recycled to compost manure that is useful in gardening. Furthermore, newspapers can be used for artistic jobs such as paper mache modeling or can be recycled to make items such as toilet paper rather than cutting down a tree. World Book, Inc 2002). In conclusion, I concur with Green corp. ’s mission to teach people especially leadership on the importance of environmental protection. The youth are the next generation leaders.

They are the excellent ambassadors of this noble cause, which is to protect our future. My corporation would target the youth and impart leader ship skills necessary to champion the fight against improper waste disposal and environment degradation. In my small way, I would save the environment unnecessary suffering.
