Romeo & Juliet and Medea “Love is a given, hatred is acquired. ” Love and hate are both very powerful. But the difference is that hate is caused by love.
Do you hate someone you don’t even know? Or do you hate someone you used to love? Hate is powerful because of love, when love dies down hate takes over. We can say we all love, it comes naturally. Hate comes after a loss of love, or because of it. In the plays Romeo & Juliet and Medea, love attempts to overpower people’s emotions yet hate still over rules it with death and pain; proving that hate is more powerful than love because hate dominates when love is lost.
When there is a lack of love, hatred dominates. Love always falls short, just like in Medea, when Medea realizes that Jason will never love her in return, that is when she wants to get revenge. It is also shows in Romeo & Juliet when Paris is not loved back, and he wants to kill and die for Juliet. In both plays people lose love, and they both end in tragedy.
Neither people truly mourned, Medea and Paris just went straight to a tragic end. Medea hated Jason, and wanted nothing but for him to suffer. Paris always knew he could never have his love, and he fought Romeo and was willing to kill and die for her.Not only is there hate, there is an absence of love. Only when people start hating themselves and each other is when they start thinking and doing crazy things.
Several can become blinded by love, and that is when hatred takes its place in controlling one’s emotions. In Romeo & Juliet, Juliet’s cousin Tybalt wants to fight with Romeo. If Juliet knew of this she would not want the two people who she cares about to fight in combat. Romeo knowing this, refuses to battle Tybalt. Mercutio, Romeo's best friend, fights instead. Romeo forbids this, and tries to stop them.
His love for Juliet makes him stop and think of what would happen if he ended up killing Tybalt, or if Tybalt killed him. While trying to stop the fight between Mercutio and Tybalt, Mercutio is stabbed and killed. After that, Romeo says; "And fire-eyed fury be my conduct now! Now, Tybalt, take the villain back again That late thou gavest me; for Mercutio's soul.. Either thou, or I, or both, must go with him. " Romeo is furious.
He has just lost his best friend, Romeo tried to stop the fight so no one would get hurt, but he actually ended up losing what meant most to him.In that moment, Romeo forgets about his love for Juliet and challenges Tybalt. Romeo knows that one of them will die, but he doesn't care, he wants to avenge his friends death. At first Romeo was sure of where his loyalties lie, but in the end, his hatred for Tybalt overpowered his love for Juliet. Medea also loved her children, nothing is stronger than the bond between a mother in her child.
Jason left Medea, his wife, for another woman. Medea wanted to hurt Jason as much as he hurt her, so she planned to kill his children -their children. She has a moment of doubt, she loves her two children! It doesn't matter if she wants revenge, her love for her children is so much greater than that. Right? "Ah, what is wrong with me? Do I want to let my go my enemies Unhurt and be laughed at for it? I must face this thing. " Eventually Medea chooses to face this, which is killing her children.
In Medea's mind, she justifies her decision to kill her own children, her reasoning is that it is more worth to get Jason back. Medea would rather win this dispute than have a family. At this moment, she realizes she hates her enemies more than anything else. Yes, she did love her children, but the power of hate overpowered that.
Hate prevailed with both Romeo, and Medea. Knowing what love is, makes hate all the more stronger. Medea gave up everything for her husband Jason, and when he left her, she was shocked and didn't know what to do with herself. All she knew was to love him, when he took that love away there was only hate for him. After that breakup, Medea wanted to get him back for all the time she wasted loving him. It is a strange form of anger, difficult to cure, When two friends turn upon each other, in hatred.
" Medea and Jason were married! Now they hate eachother. It is much easier to hold a grudge, than to forgive someone. Hate has a lot to do with pride, no one wants to admit they're wrong. Medea would never ask Jason for forgivness. Both love and hate blind people, everyone starts loving, that eventually goes away, then hate takes over.
Everyone knows what love is, and when that love is gone, nothing but hate is left. "Oh Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo?Deny thy father and refuse thy name; Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, And I'll no longer be a Capulet. " Juliet was willing to give up her own family, and betray them to be with Romeo. Love is strong, and can blind people, such as Juliet. Romeo and Juliet could not be together because their families hate eachother, but they are both willing to forget about all that to be happy with one another.
In this quote, love seems to overpower hate. Romeo and Juliet's love seems to overcome the everlasting battle between the Montagues and Capulets. In the end, Romeo drinks poison because he was led to believe that Juliet was dead. Juliet was actually faking her death, and when she wakes, she finds her love dead, so she stabs herself with his dagger.
If there was never a dispute between the two families, Romeo and Juliet would never have killed themselves. Yes, the ending was a tragedy, but that just goes to show how the hate causes one to react. Hate actually won, Romeo and Juliet are gone, because of this strong hate between their families that made them think there was no other option but death.
