Samsung India has bagged two awards in the ‘Excellent Category’ and one in the ‘Distinguished Category’ at the International Quality Circle Convention 2002 organised by the Quality Circle Forum of India in Lucknow this month. Besides India, 19 countries participated in the convention, which was attended by more than 1,100 delegates from various countries like Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and India.

A total of 30 delegates, comprising three groups, participated in the QCFI from Samsung India.The teams participated in the oral presentation section where a total of 300 delegates participated from around the world. According to Samsung India Electronics Ltd managing director SS Lee: ‘‘Our success at the Quality Circle activity is the result of our bottom-up approach to establishing quality systems at the factory. It is based on the thinking that the individual creativity of our line operators can be channelised into continuously improving the quality of our products and ultimately improving the productivity and efficiency of our production line. ’’The Quality Circle activity was initiated at Samsung India in September 1997 with the objective of involving line operators in the quality process in production.

A total of around 46 Quality Circles are operating in different streams of manufacturing. Each Quality Circle has members from different departments and support interaction with each other, across different levels, once every week in order to discuss, analyse and solve problems pertaining to their respective work areas. Frequent training programmes are conducted to upgrade the knowledge and skills of Quality Circle members.
