The world is currently experiencing a population crisis as the human population exceeds the capacity of its habitat.

Population is always dependent on its environment, which is the Earth (Sample). The present situation of the world is that the number of people already exceeds the number of lives that the environmental resources could sustain. Thus, posing a population crisis. Overpopulation is different from population density or the amount of people per landmass.

Overpopulation concerns the capacity of the environment necessary to sustain human activities (Hopkins). By the year 2050, the world's population is expected to grow by 3. 5 billion. The third world countries are alarmed with the rapid increase of their population for it will cripple their economy and destroy the inherent environment. There will be unending battle over food and land, like what Thomas Malthus said. Humanity is living well beyond the parameters of environmental sustainability (Tulloch).

However, when we tend to compare the lifestyle between the rich and the poor countries, we will see that the rich countries are in great trouble as we also need to consider the availability of resources needed to sustain life. Most rich countries are industrialized and they already depleted their natural resources further limiting the available resources without degrading the inherent lifestyle of the population (Hopkins). Furthermore, the climate change that we are currently facing is another challenge to the growing population as people struggle for fertile land preventing people in producing more crops for food.
