What do we understand by "reality"? For those of us who consider ourselves hard-headed realists, there is a common-sense based answer: "Reality consists of the things - tables, chairs, trees, houses, planets, animals, people and so on - which are actual items made of matter. " We might tend to include some more abstract-seeming notions such as space and time, and the totality of all such "real" things would be referred to as "the universe".

However, some might as well consider that this is not the whole of reality. In particular, there is the question of the reality of our minds.Should we not include a conscious experience as something real? What about concepts, such as truth, virtue or beauty? Reality is supreme truth. Reality in everyday usage means “the state of things as they actually exist”.

Reality is found ultimately in literature. Some individuals are able to face what reality has for them, while others cover the truth of reality with their own desires. The basis of the play of Othello is centred on three main points, Othello’s reality, Iago’s reality, Cassio’s and Roderigo’s reality. Each character has constructed a reality for them selves.

Othello is a noble man who is well known and respected, for his position as a general. He is a general that is experienced in battle and shows courage and dignity. He also has a lot of respect for his fellow men like Casio and Iago and is reliable to them. Othello's valiant personality is a major part of his success in the military as well as with the ladies, especially his wife Desdemona.

Because Othello was who he is as a person, it made Desdemona fall in love with him and go through tough times, like facing her father Barbantio after getting married without his consent.Othello is blinded in his love for Desdemona, blind to all the consequences of a secret love, and ultimately blinded to the treachery of his friend Iago. Desdemona is also blinded, she does not see the color of Othello's skin, and even in the events leading up to the end she never curses him for his actions.Othello said to Desdemona: “Upon this hint I spake: She loved me for me for the dangers I had pass’d, And I loved her that she did pity them. This only is the witchcraft I have used: Here comes the lady: let her witness it.

(1. . 165-169) Othello believes that Desdemona fell in love with his stories of his life, and that he fell in love with her reaction to his stories. Aside from Desdemona his wife, Othello’s reality only consists of fighting for his country. Iago is smart. He is an expert judge of people and their characters and uses this to his advantage.

For example, in the movie Iago knows Roderigo is in love with Desdemona and figures that he would do anything to have her as his own. Iago says about Roderigo, “Thus do I ever make my fool my purse. (Act I, Scene III, Line 355).By playing on his hopes, Iago is able to swindle money and jewels from Roderigo, making himself a substantial profit, while using Roderigo to forward his other goals. Iago also thinks quickly on his feet and is able to improvise whenever something unexpected occurs.

When Cassio took hold of Desdemona’s hand before Othello arrived, Iago says, “With as little a web as this will I ensnare as great a fly as Cassio. ” Iago is capable of anything. Michael Cassio, Othello’s friend, Cassio was made Othello’s lieutenant. His promotion over Iago by Othello is a factor in what actions he will take.

Casio was the main reason why Othello had started to suspect and have doubts about Desdemona and Casio being together all because of Iago’s false rumours that had manipulated Othello into believing them. Casio reality is constructed around obeying Othello. Roderigo is the individual that obeys Iago because he believes that he will do him some good. Roderigo’s reality is constructed around Desdemona and Iago.In conclusion, the characters in the play of “Othello” by William Shakespeare have their realities constructed around one another character or around something they want for themselves. Reality is something that exists independently of all other things and from which all other things derive.

Some individuals are able to face what reality has for them, while others cover the truth of reality with their own desires. Reality is the truth of how things unravel in the play in which many characters disagree with the reality they are surrounded by.
