m. tonight! I’m having “technical difficulties” while trying to upload my homework, oh no! I emailed my instructor to let her know what’s happening, but she hasn’t responded – to top it off, this darn thing is worth 100 points. The worst part is when I was registered for this class, I wasn't even give the option to take it a traditionally or online. I’ve never been great at math, and I'm definitely not what you call a 'self-teacher'.

I’ve always learned better hands-on, where I am in class so I can simply ask my instructor directly if I have a question and get an immediate response. This, however, is my personal learning preference – other students may prefer to complete courses online on their own time. With ever-changing technology and demand for convenience, it’s no surprise students often have the option to take classes traditionally or online. While there are several similarities to these two class types, there are also differences among them. If you’re not particularly ‘tech-savvy’, traditional schooling may provide you with a better learning opportunity than an online class would. Don’t get me wrong; with the continual modernization of gizmos and gadgets, it’s enjoyable for many students to stay ‘hip’ and ‘up-to-date’ with the newest technology.

However, when one attempts to mix technology with schooling, it can impact the way they learn and communicate with their teachers and peers. Traditional schooling gives you opportunity to learn while you work alongside others. When learning in a traditional classroom, you are able to develop rapport with your instructor and fellow classmates, enriching your communication skills and opening your eyes to the diversity in the world. Depending on an individual’s preferred learning style and educational needs, traditional classes may be the best fit if you like to be held accountable for attendance and learning from an ‘on-hand approach’. For students that are attending college for the first time and may need more guidance, or for the student who is returning back to school for the first time in many years like myself, attending class on campus allows you to establish routine, study structure, and relationships in a different way than an online class might.

While online classes are not my preferred style of learning, they are the perfect fit for many students today. Online classes provide a different level of convenience for students who also have full time jobs or other timely commitments. In contrast to traditional schooling, some students learn and understand content better by teaching themselves and using their own methods of understanding academic information. It is similar to traditional schooling in that students are required to hand in assignments and communicate with class participants, but online – the communication happens in a different way. As mentioned throughout this paper, there are similarities and differences to these two class types.

While one type of learning works for some students, a different method is preferred by others – much of it depending on styles of learning and communication habits. Traditional education has proven to be the best fit for me, as I tend to struggle with technology and prefer a person-to-person connection with my teachers and peers. Aside from the difference in classroom style, I feel we have enough technology in our lives already, but other students may say the exact opposite.
