The entirety of the story is sprinkled with symbols of new life and a grand hopefulness. Chopin’s word choice is careful and precise in depicting an optimistic scene.
There is hardly room for a reader to argue that Mrs. Mallard is not zealous at the thought of a future stripped of the chain of marriage. Women in the late 1800’s were treated as property and forced to comply with the whims and wishes of their husbands.Leaving your husband would lead almost certainly to being ostracized and suffering persecution. High-standing women, as Louise Mallard seems to be, had as much power as the lower-class women.
They were all expected to fill the ‘standard’ matronly roles without complaint. Louise, now a widow, would have an excuse to live the rest of her days without husband. She would not be ridiculed or persecuted for leaving her husband. It seems as though, in these times, becoming a widow was the only sensible path to freedom.Chopin exercises the motif of ‘openness’ in her story and provides many details throughout to tie in the very idea.
Louise spends the moments after taking in the difficult news of her husband’s passing staring out the window. The window, which is open, is almost the entire framework of the story. If Mrs. Mallard had been sitting in a room devoid of windows, we may not be so quick to think that her life is actually going to change. Phrases like “The delicious breath or rain was in the air,” are weaved in and out of each paragraph to tie together the feeling of freshness and openness within the story.There are so many references to nature and air and the sky that we almost feel the wind on our faces as we read.
We are as excited as Louise to travel across the borders of the room and into the open stretch of life before us. Alas, the dream is ripped from us and from Louise in an instant. She is back in the chair and the window is shut; she will never purchase the peddler’s wares, touch the trees with her white, slender hands, or taste the delicious freedom she so longed for. It is not so cruel of Chopin to pull us down from the sky this way.
It is real.
