Mother tongue means it is the language first learned by a child or one's native language rather a parent language and passed from one generation to the next. It is the language community of the mother tongue, the language spoken in a region, which enables the process of acculturation, the growing of an individual into a particular system of linguistic perception of the world and participation in the centuries old history of linguistic production.As a student my big perception of this is it’s a big deal to use it because many have a positive and negative about this and an argument will have. Actually the general usage of the term 'mother tongue' denotes not only the language one learns from one's mother, but also the speaker's dominant and home language, i. e.
not only the first language according to the time of acquisition, but the first with regard to its importance and the speaker's ability to master its linguistic and communicative aspects.Maybe it’s complicated to use it but some people try very seriously and teach the children from the beginning why it's important to learn their mother tongue and stress that if someone want to learn about the culture of their country it is very important to learn mother tongue. Of course books, information are available in English but there is a difference in understanding the culture, traditions, history of the nation learning through their mother tongue. It will be easy to understand when they become fluent with the mother tongue they can read the wonderful literature, history, about the customs, the changes that are taking place etc.Using the mother tongue, we have learn to think, learn to communicate and acquired an intuitive understanding of grammar.
The mother tongue opens the door, not only to its own grammar, but to all grammars, inasmuch as it awakens the potential for universal grammar that lies within all of us. This fore knowledge is the result of interactions between a first language and our fundamental linguistic endowment, and is the foundation on which we build our Selves. It is the greatest asset people bring to the task of foreign language learning.For this reason, the mother tongue is the master key to foreign languages, the tool which gives us the fastest, surest, most precise, and most complete means of accessing a foreign language. And as English major it’s must be used systematically, selectively the well-directed and informative use of lexical and syntactic parallels between the mothers tongues.
Learning first in the mother tongue is the best way to learn the other languages. Quality communication necessitates excellent skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing.These skills are best acquired by using the mother tongue. The use of one's own language in education therefore provides a strong foundation to the child and develops the skills and confidence to bridge to a new language and culture.
The brief description of the contexts and conditions in which the action studies were implemented highlights that even though all the projects had a common agenda, namely, designing and experimenting with a programmed of imparting mother tongue literacy, they had to contend with wide diversity for selecting the language and location within the country.
