My mind map has been developed from using the theories, theorist, and concepts that have been discussed in unit one through unit five. I have linked the various groups of theories and theorist around the public administration discipline.

The three theory area specified mind maps developed are organizational theory, decision-making theory, and theory of management. The organizational theory map focuses on the classical and neoclassical organization and the different theorist views and opinions. The fundamental beliefs, societal values and social structure of the organization are the main focus of the theories of this era.The decision-making theory map focuses on the rational and incremental decision making approach used throughout management within public service. Herbert Simmons and Harold Lasswell are theorist who support the rational decision making approach. Charles E.

Lindblom rejects the rational approach to decision making and leads the theory of incremental approach. Amitia Etzioni, a theorist who believed in the “split the difference”, uses both incremental and rational comprehensive approach for seeking short term solutions to the problems. In today’s public service issues, these decision making theories are used by public leaders in implementing and evaluating public policy (Shafritz et al,2009). The theory of management map is based on many principles and influenced by several theorist beliefs and ideas. Luther Gulick and Henri Fayol shared similarities in management principles and functions.

Luther Gulick focuses on seven main functions of management which is referred to as POSDCORB: planning, organizing, staffing, directing, coordinating, reporting and budgeting.Henri Fayol primary focus is on the seven managerial principles of coordination, control, organization, planning and accounting. Catheryn Seckler -Hudson believed principles are laws to be applied. Herbert Simmons disagreed with the whole principles approach (Shafritz et al, 2009) The mind map will develop through the introduction of theories, theorist, and concepts that we cover the next few weeks. The various groups of theories, theorist and concepts will show a relevant connection between contemporary practices in public service.
