Making Cute Pencil Holder from Egg Shell

Gently tap a small hole on the pointed end of an egg with a knife. Empty the contents and rinse the eggshell thoroughly. Leave it to dry completely. 2. Mix one part PVA glue with one part water. Papier mache the whole eggshell, covering the hole, with: (a) one layer of newspaper strips torn into small pieces, (b) another layer of small pieces torn from unprinted newspaper margins and (c) a third layer of small pieces torn from magazine page.

Allow to dry. 3. Use the piercing tool to form a hole in the layers of papier mache covering the hole of the eggshell. Widen the hole with a pencil.4. Cut out the circles of the translucent egg-carton cups.

Place the circles with the outside facing up. Draw eyes in the middle with the black marker. 5. Use UHU glue to stick the two circles onto the eggshell, side by side, as eyes.

Draw an outline onto the shell following the edges of the circles. Draw a diamond shape below the eyes as the beak for the owl. 6. Cut out a strip from the CD and trim a small diamond piece from it. Glue it to the beak.

7. Draw a teardrop shape on the scrap paper and cut it out as a template for the wing. Place the template by the side of the eye, and trace the outline. Use the black marker to draw and define the outline of the wing. Do the same for the other side of the shell.

8. Tear out small pieces from magazine pages with colours darker and contrasting the papier mached owl. Glue them onto the back, head above the eyes, and wings of the owl. Add a few torn pieces which are lighter in tone onto the wings too, to differentiate it from the body. 9.

Draw patterns on the front, wings and “eye-brows” above the eyes. 10. Divide and cut the toilet roll into eight equal parts. Cut open a toilet roll ring and then overlap one end over the other to glue it back together again.

This makes a smaller ring. Paint the outside of the ring. 11. Apply UHU glue around the rim of the toilet roll ring and place the owl onto it to stick them together. Draw the toes of the owl on the ring, below the body of the owl.LET the kids kill some time creatively this school break by getting them to make a couple of these charming pencil-holder owls.

Cover the eggshells with layers of papier mache before decorating with a final layer of colourful paper mosaics. If your children are not the patient sort, then painting the patterns will be a better and quicker option. The owls make great door gifts or you can add them to kids’ party packs. They are, after all, symbols of wisdom and knowledge.
