The inefficiencies included using a paper-based picking order, an inefficient warehouse location of products, and bad routing of products from staging area to the shipping area.Combined all these things made it much harder to fill orders properly and timely, thus causing an excess to have to be used such as extra labor and costs.
An alternative to the old system is a wireless based system and a much better warehouse item location plan. The new wireless system can be used to replace the old paper system and provide a way to have better tracking of items and their locations within the warehouse. The warehouse itself should be rearranged to make the locations of items to be more efficient in picking and order placements.Using a barcoded system for the products can also make it so that tracking and monitoring the products can be more efficient.
I feel that the best system is more a combination of systems in the alternatives. Combining the wireless system of tracking and order placing with the arrangement of the warehouse to the best efficient way of getting the products makes it that much better. One system would not be able to fix the problems associated with the old system.Using a barcode system allows for much better tracking of products in location and in amounts on hand.
Implementing the solution would depend on many aspects such as size of the warehouse to locations of products and the way they have to go to the shipping area and to how the orders are given to the pickers. You would have to make sure that the wireless system has full signals to all parts of the warehouse so having a large amount of wireless access points is a must have. You do not want an area to not have access to the system.Then rearranging the warehouse itself to a more efficient floor plan will increase the efficiency of the pickers to get their pick orders faster and with much less hassle.
The methodologies I would use is showing a floor plan of the warehouse and having an example of the placements for the wireless system in place and the new arrangement of the products in the warehouse that shows the most efficient routes for pickers. Another way is to show how a barcode tracking system can make it more efficient in keeping track of orders and placement.
