“It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.

” Albert Einstein Computers, iPads, iPods, palm pilots, kindles, tablets, GPS, and even more. In society today, most people have one or more of these technology devices that are used on a regular basis. Schedules and agendas are planned and maintained with technology. Majority of communication is made through technology. Stop and think about all of the technology used on an everyday basis.

If it were to all be taken away, would life still operate in a manner that is not chaotic? As in the novel Feed and in the film I, Robot, technology has become a major aspect in every day lives. The question is: Is it being taken too far? Is technology relied on too much? In Feed, the feed has not only become a major part of their lives, but it is their life. The feed, a transmitter implanted directly into their brains, allowed them a non-stop access to the world of the Internet.Today, technology may not be implanted into our brains, but it is arm’s reach on such a regular basis that people have just as much access to it as Titus and his friends did in Feed. Just as in the Feed, technology is used for communication, advertisement, and personal usage. People rely on technology such as, social networks, email, text messages, instant messages, etc, to communicate with one another.

These sources are utilized for business and personal settings. Often times, phone calls and face-to-face communication become a thing of the past due to technological communication being on the rise.It easy, sometimes, much easier to text, instant message, and email someone for a quick response than to call or converse face-to-face. In 2010, the United States population holds approximately 310,232, 863 and of that number, about 239, 893, 600 people used the Internet. (“Internet World Stat”) The reliance on technology has many advantages.

Opposed to physically going to the store, online shopping can be done from your own home, or due to mobile technology devices, from wherever you are.According to The National Data Book, 234, 667 million dollars was spent on online shopping in the year 2009. This number has nearly doubled since 2003, when the value of online sales was only 131, 171 million. (“The 2012 Statistical Abstract”) This statistic goes to show that many people utilize the Internet for many shopping conveniences such as books, magazines, clothing, computer hardware and software, food, furniture, and many more things.Just as in Feed, where the author describes the images seen through the feed that were advertisement: “Images on Coke…boys in Gap tees…Nike grav-gear…” (Anderson 27) With technology being on a constant rise, people are able to rely on it to do things that humans were able to do 20 years ago.

Opposed to speaking to live people when making business, nowadays businesses have an automated service to go through before being able to speak to a live person. Viewers are able to see in I, Robot how technology has risen to a point of having physical robots there to conduct business for them.Just as in the scene where there was a robot as a waiter for Detective Spooner and the captain. Technology has improved so much today that people are able to do many things without a live person. The people in I, Robot relied on their robots to handle business and do things with and for them. For example, Detective Spooner’s grandmother and her robot were cooking together.

Will technology continue to rise to a point where we no longer have to do anything for ourselves? In, I, Robot, they did not even have to drive for themselves. It had become an option to drive in “manual override.”Detective Spooner was able to close his eyes while on the road because technology had advanced to a point where he didn’t have to drive the car, but it drove for him. Just as in Feed, where Titus was able to feed the upcar with an address and it did the driving (Anderson 294). In Feed, they did not have to search for new music; the feed gave it to them.

“This is the music you heard. This is the music you missed. This is what is new. Listen” (Anderson 5).

At the rate that technology is rising today, will it cause people to become less intelligent? In this day, information is given to us at the tip of our fingers. People are able to receive answers to almost anything asked. Physical research, such as going to the library, is becoming more and more obsolete. Information is at the touch of our fingers. Just as the author wrote in Feed, “…you can be supersmart without even working” (Anderson 47).

Violet says to Titus, “ No one with feeds thinks about it. When you have the feed all your life, you’re brought up not to think about things” (Anderson 113).That can somewhat describe things of today. Frequently, regular internet users tend to skim information instead of reading in.

When searching for information it has been studied that people typically read no more than one or two pages of an article or book before they would “bounce” out to another site (TheAtlantic. com). Carr states, “Our ability to interpret text, to make the rich mental connections that form when we read deeply and without distraction, remains largely disengaged” (TheAtlantic. com).Do people rely on electronic information for everything? If people continue to only “skim” through readings, will this truly force true reading to be a thing of the past? To conclude, is technology being relied on too much today? Will technology continue to rise to a point of there being robots and technology that makes it “easier. ” Feed and I, Robot are great displays of how technology has advanced past the levels of today.

In our future, will people rely on robots and technology to run society?
