Schubert was an artist who was born on 31st January, 1797 in Vienna and was a son to a school master, Franz Theodor Schubert. Schubert is one of the greatest and most popular artists of the 19th century.
His music is regarded as the most finest in the world something that earned him an international recognition. He started his elementary school quite early due to the influence of his father who was a teacher. As a result of this, at the age of five years he was a student at Himmelpfortgrund School. It is this education opportunity that laid the foundation of Schubert’s musical career. At school his father would teach him about the basics of playing violin while his brother would show him how to play a piano. At the age of seven he was being trained some music lessons by Holzer who was by then a church choirmaster and an organist.
All these lessons were very important in defining who Schubert would become. This research paper is going to focus on the life of Schubert, his musical career and persons who influenced him and those that he in turn influenced. The paper will also show the kind of music he played and why he came to be one of the greatest artists of the time.As mentioned above, there are specific people whose role they played in Schubert’s life in one way or the other led him to develop a strong interest in music.
These are people like his brother who taught him how to play a piano, his father who gave him musical lessons when he joined his school and another person who also played a significant role in his career development is the church master, Holzer who gave him moral support and through him he was able to have access to a pianoforte warehouse where he would practice more on what he had learned.Schubert’s career also received a major boost when he was accepted as a choir boy in a local Court Chapel where he met people like Phillip Korner and Antonio Salieri who helped him to compose his first symphony, a school orchestra (Flower, Newman 67). This musical composition put him in the public lime light and as by 1984 he was able to be recognized by the music authority. Though Schubert was performing well in other subjects, he was performed exceptionally well in music and that was why he decided to concentrate more on music. When his mother died and his father remarried, his step mother provided him with money to finance his career (M-files).
After he finished his choir scholarship at Stadtkonvikt, he returned home in 1813 to train as a teacher at Normalhauptschule School that was owned by his father. He wanted to be given a better position but when his request was turned down, he decided to lean more on his music and by doing this he was able to produce his first true masterpiece entitled the Gretchen at the Spinning-wheel among other hundred and forty four songs, two masses and a symphony within 1815 alone (Flower, Newman 67).Though Schubert admired the work of Beethoven, his music style reflected much about Mozart and Haydn’s styles. His music never shined as one would have expected because Beethoven had produced a lot of work that was admired by many plus by then he was an upcoming artist while the former had matured fully in music. His music was greatly overshadowed by the works of Beethoven who was well funded than Schubert.
It is only after Schubert died that others started to recognize the part and the role he played in music industry. One of the artists that were influenced by his music was Johann Vogl who greatly admired his music to an extent that he would sing Schubert’s songs in various functions. Also Schubert’s music seemed to have been forgotten quickly after he died but it was revived by his brother something that made it to be recognized by artists such as Mendelssohn and Schumann who used his songs to further their musical careers.Later, some of the symphonies that he played but were overshadowed by Beethoven’s, were brought to the light again by other artists like Arthur Sullivan and George Grove. Though Schubert was regarded as jovial socialist who had accomplished much in music and produced great works of art that were unmatched, this picture is darkened by other artist who say that he had mood swings and was not morally upright perhaps because of the fact that he contacted syphilis from a prostitute though this was not substantiated (McKay 58).
Schubert is famous for the works of art such as symphonies: the unfinished (8th), the Tragic (4th) and the sweeping Great C major (9th). He also produced two masses, Piano Quintet for example the Trout and over six hundred songs of various genres. Apart from this, he is credited for String Quartets, Cell Sonata, over 21 piano sonata and left some incomplete among other piano duet and solos such as Moments Musicaux, Impromptus and wanderer (Classical Net). Indeed, Franz Schubert was a great musician whose part he played remains unmatched. The dent he left in the music industry cannot be occupied by anything else apart from his music which up to date has not lost its appeal.
He is today regarded as one of the greatest artists of the world who were able to build their career in music and is credited much for the great works of art he produced. He started his music career while he was still young but with the help of his brother, his father, his church master among others he was able to move to greater heights.
