When one speaks of religious beliefs, there are many things that need to be considered Let us begin this topic of discussion by defining just what the term “Religion” has been perceived and defined as according to the dictionary. According to dictionary.
com, religion has been defined as “a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman or agency agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.” Everyone has his or hers own opinion of what “religion” is to them, but these are only speculations and nothing definite about what the true meaning of religion really is, and has yet to be established. This particular topic of discussion paper will talk about how religious traditions not only describe, but also encourage the following relationships with what some call the “Divine,” but will also discuss other topics such as time, space and even the world. This discussion will also identify key critical issues in the study of religion with specific examples on Hinduism such as their traditions and beliefs.A religious persons' world views a transcendent dimension to life that there is a supernatural power beyond human beings. Religion has different meanings to different people, and based on how a person grew up and who raised him or her.
It could have been a traumatic experience, which can push someone to follow a different life in terms of religion.Everyday lives of people following daily rituals and traditions can be seen. Christians worship God, who they believe is the creator of the entire world. Muslims worship Mohammed in whom they believe is a prophet from God, Buddhist believes in Buddha, and Hindus believe in Brahma. It is evident that People around the world worship something, or someone, depending on their beliefs.
People born with “Divine” spend long hours every day with the objective to obtain more divine powers, which they will use for happiness of people and for world peace. Different religions refer to the sacred and originating holiness by various names. Some of these names are Great Mother, Divine Parent, Great Spirit, the Holy, or the Divine. Perhaps, the most familiar term used is God, According to Molloy and Hilgers (2010), the term “God” carries with it the notion of a Cosmic Person, and has been considered as a divine person with will and intelligence that cannot be matched, and in some instances, not even understood. Although some religions believe only in one God, there are others who believe in more than one.
Many religions still believe in developing a relationship with what they call the “Divine.” A relationship with the Divine means spending quality time with the Divine. This quality time means spending time with the Divine in various ways such as praying, reading of religious materials such as the Veda, or even the Quran, by studying the Bible, or whatever other form of Holy material available. From a personal perspective, I was raised a Catholic, born to believe in the Virgin Mary, led to believe that she is the mother of “God.” Not really any understanding of religion, I attended Catholic school as my parents requested and began to believe that Mary was the mother of God.
Meanwhile I passed a church that was on the corner, and I recall hearing the foot stomping, hand clapping, and worshippers singing. My curiosity began to become aroused, and I found sometime later that this was a Baptist church. I did not know what the Baptist was nor of their belief system, the same could be said of the church that I was attending; I only knew that there was a difference between the “services” conducted at the two different churches. When I could decide on which “religion” that I wanted to follow, I chose the Baptist, and began to learn of their beliefs.
After following the Baptist belief system for some time, I discovered that I wanted to venture out some more and learn of other religions as well.I finally decided that I wanted to follow the Non-denominational church because they just worshipped “God” and believed that obedience to his word was good enough to make it to “Heaven.” I never really had a clear understanding of what religion was about, in my own mind, it is a belief system that one sets up with their “God,” “Maker”, “Creator”, or whatever name that they choose to call him or her. I believe that everyone should believe in something or someone, in other words, something or someone of a higher nature or authority.
