Tobacco use of any kind is hurtful to the human body and their health because there are a lot of serious health risks in using tobacco products. There is even a surgeon general warning on packs of cigarettes. “A Report of the Surgeon General on the topic of smoking has been issued nearly every year since 1964. The initial 1964 Surgeon General's report was the first major report to alert government, health officials, and the public about the consequences of smoking (Smoking,2001).
” Tobacco can be used many different ways. Ways tobacco can be used are as follows: smoking, chewed, sniffed, or dipped. (CDC,2012). By using tobacco any of these ways no matter what way it is it is still very harmful to the health of the human body. “The adverse health effects from cigarette smoking account for an estimated 443,000 deaths, or nearly one of every five deaths, each year in the United States (CDC,2012).”When tobacco is smoked, it can be in cigarettes, pipes, or cigars.
When tobacco is chewed it is compressed moist tobacco ‘plug’ or ‘twist’. When tobacco is snuffed, it is ground into fine powder and sniffed into the nose. When tobacco is dipped, it is moist and ground and ground and placed into the space between the gums and cheek. (CDC,2012)There are a lot of ways to use tobacco but the worst and most dangerous form is smoking. (CDC,2012) Cigarette smoke attacks the lungs’ natural defenses and can completely paralyze the natural cleansing process. By smoking cigarettes a person make themselves more susceptible to getting sick because they smoke they have excess mucus.
When tobacco smoke enters the human body it releases 7,000 chemicals into the body. (Anonymous,2010) A lot of people don’t think that second hand smoke does not affect them if they are non-smokers but whether you are or not a smoker second hand smoke still affects them. Imagine if you are sitting next to someone that is smoking and they release the smoke and you breathe it in, those 7,000 chemicals are going into and affecting your body.Smoking cigarettes makes your pulse quicken making your heart beat 10-25 times faster than normal. Your heart beating faster is not very good for your heart and will have consequences.
When your heart beats faster it causes it to work harder and can double to risk of a heart attack. 20% of all deaths from heart disease can be directly related to people that smoke cigarettes. If you have heart disease and heart problems it would probably be in your best interest to not become a smoker. When your heart beats faster it increases your risk of having an enlarged heart. An enlarged heart can be fatal.
It can kill you in your sleep and never know its coming. “According to A Report of the Surgeon General: How Tobacco Smokes Causes Disease that even just one cigarette can trigger a heart attack (Anonymous,2010).”:Smoking cigarettes results in a runny nose and a proverbial smoker’s cough. A lot of people think that they only have a smoker’s cough but little do they know they may have already have lost a lot of lung capacity from COPD and not even know it.
“Many middle-aged smokers have already lost significant lung capacity through COPD without having received a formal diagnosis (Tobacco Use, 2007).” Serious irritation occurs to the membranes that are sensitive in the nose and throat from irritating gases in cigarette smoke, such as formaldehyde, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and others. If you know a person who smokes you may notice that their allergies and cough is way worse than a person who doesn’t smoke. My grandmother recently passed away and had a pulmonary lung disease because she smoked almost all of her life. One of her lungs was completely black and the other lung was almost as bad.
My mother went to the doctor and has the same thing and her doctor told her that if she didn’t stop smoking she would go down the same road that her mother did. “An estimated 90% of all deaths from chronic obstructive lung disease are caused by smoking (CDC,2012).”Smoking cigarettes affects the male and female reproductive systems in a bad way. In both male and female reproductive systems smoking can increase the risk of infertility. People who smoke probably don’t realize that something as small as smoking can affect something so life changing.
“Smoking cigarettes while pregnant can cause preterm delivery, stillbirth, low birth weight, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) (University of Montana,2010).”Smoking cannot only affect your short term health but staying a smoker will affect your long term health as well. Smoking has been found to cause the following cancers: acute myeloid leukemia, bladder cancer, cancer of the cervix, cancer of the esophagus, kidney cancer, cancer of the larynx, lung cancer, cancer of the oral cavity(mouth), pancreatic cancer, cancer of the pharynx(throat), and stomach cancer.
