1.0 INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUNDComputer is an advanced electronic device which manipulate data according to a set of instruction provided and generate the desired output, It can process both numerical and non-numerical (arithmetic and logical) calculations.. The two principal characteristics of a computer are: it responds to a specific set of instructions in a well-defined manner and it can execute a prerecorded list of instructions (a program).
In computer system every things follows a pattern and schedule in order to operate efficiently. Many organization use computer to effectively ( produce required result) and efficiently facilitate performance of their day to day activities to carry out organization goal.Computer virus can affect the function of a computer such as the screen and display appearances or the simple functions such as the way the keyboard operates or the functionality of the drives. The computer virus and its technology represent a relatively new phenomenon, although its origins can be traced back to the late fifties. The emergence of the virus technology may be attributed to a combination of factors, including the wide availability of computer resources, the increased level of connectivity, the event of decentralized computing with a certain relaxation of security measures, the development of a hacker community (culture and literacy), and perhaps a general decline in morality principles.
The key property of the virus is thus its "infection" feature: it attaches itself to another piece of code which serves as its carrier or host. A virus does not necessarily need to contain destructive code, nor does it need to make exact copies of itself. A number of computer specialists are still of the opinion that the virus problem has been over-estimated, surveys indicate that the incidence of virus infections within academic and commercial computing environments has grown exponentially to very high levels. The main issue is that despite the advice and controls, computer viruses may continue to be a serious problem.
"Statement of the Problem" is Result of computer viruses on performance of computer, "What Can Be Done Now" describes current recommendations for preventing computer viruses. "Problem Extent and Future Impact" focuses on the extent to which viruses have affected computing and whether current recommendations for dealing with viruses will be adequate in the futureTherefore this project give a fully understanding of the effect of viruses on computer performance and what will be required for the organizations in order to protect themselves from virus attack.2.0 RESEARCH PROBLEMComputer viruses are program segments that copy versions of themselves into programs (targets) and thereby convert the targets into vehicles for further propagation. Viruses usually spread from program to program within a single system by thus reproducing every time any infected program runs. Moreover, they can spread from system to system whenever an infected program is introduced into another system.
It should not be assumed that larger systems are immune to computer viruses and related threats. Rather, whatever actions a virus may effect on a microcomputer could be possible on a larger system.Computer viruses can affect the fundamental functions of a computer system such as the screen and display appearances or the simple functions such as the way the keyboard operates or the functionality of the drives, decrease in memory space, slow operation and damaged programs or loss of files. Those virus harm computer system as a result will harm the organization performance.Viruses have become a serious dilemma in recent years, and currently, thousands of known virus programs exist .The four most universally encountered malevolent programs are computer viruses, worms, Trojan horses and logic bombs.
HYPOTHESIS,RESEARCH QUESTION I seek to get answers of the following question: i)What are the effects of viruses on computer system on organization? ii)What are the control measures used to secure computer system against viruses? iii)What are the software tools can be implemented to improve performance of computer system. iv)What are the rules to be followed in using computer system3.0 LITERATURE REVIEW Literature review involves systematic identification, location, and analysis of documents containing information related to a research problem under investigation. The literature review will be the ground of this project on effect of viruses on computer and network organization as whole. On theoretical part, which focuses on how authors explain various issues on understanding impacts of computer viruses on computer and network system on organization for success. The literature review or critical review helps the reader to generate and refine your research ideas (Mark 2007,p 54) He emphasizes on the importance and necessity on reviewing other works done by other authors which actually give the researcher highlights where he/she want to go about the area of study.
Theoretical Review According to Chris and Stewart(2004,p.208) define a computer virus is a computer program that can copy itself and infect a computer without the permission or knowledge of the owner. In short computer virus is a program designed by a computer professional to harm the computer system without the knowledge of current user of the computer system. On theoretical part, which focuses on how authors explain various issues on understanding effects of computer viruses on computer and network system on organization for success. The various issues are:Different malware types Malicious software in short malware, It is software designed and developed for the purpose specifically to damage or disrupts a single computer, server,or computer network, malware is a general name for all programs that are harmful to computer system, viruses,Trojan, worms and all other similar programs.
(Helsink University of Technology,2001). How viruses spread outVirus mission is to jump from program to other and this should happen as quickly as possible.Usually viruses join to the host program in someway. They even write over part of the host program.
These viruses spread normally via flopy disk and other removable media which may come from virtually any other source.(Helsink University ofTchnology,2001)Empirical Literature Review These are the most important part of literature review, empirical can be a good source of detailed information,It deals mainly with the ideas, conclusions and recommendations from other authors on a particular area of study
