Many people are debating what should be done about the driving age since more fatal car accidents are happening day by day.
There are many pros and cons to each side and so far, most attempts to raise the driving age have failed. Society usually sees 18 as the age that young people become adults. Shouldn’t driving be one of the privileges and responsibilities of adulthood? The driving age should be raised to 18 because it reduces significantly the number of accidents and will benefit society as a whole. There have been much too many accidents to not raise the driving age.
Firstly, teens (especially boys) have a different attitude to driving compared to older ones. For example, they can be fearless and thrill-seeking, taking risks and they are also more influenced by peer pressure and more competitive. Both of these make risky behavior more likely leading to more accidents. Secondly, GDL makes it so young drivers can’t drive without an adult for 12 months after they start so, it’s really raising the legal driving age by a year already and that is why accident rates are lower.But, the rates are still too high so, adding more years would cut deaths even more. Therefore, the driving age should be raised since safety does come first after all.
To continue, raising the driving age will mean that fewer cars will be driven and that will benefit society as a whole. Firstly, it will reduce overcrowding on the roads. This will ease traffic and allow drivers to get to their destination freely and more quick. Secondly, cars are one the largest sources of CO2 emissions which increases concentrations of greenhouse gasses.So, less cars reduce the number of heat-related illnesses, crop failures, and floods; all caused by the greenhouse effect. Therefore, society should definitely support the driving age being raised because it can definitely benefit them.
In conclusion, the driving age needs to be raised to 18. It will help society as a whole a significant amount and will reduce accidents greatly as well. Because of this, if the driving age isn’t raised, it will surely impact everyone negatively and it will be too late to make the right decision when it happens.
