Media plays a great role in allowing the people to be informed, to be educated or to be entertained. People, especially teenagers, are purposely or unknowingly connecting to each other by communicating and informing themselves about the latest trends, events and happenings in the community.They are fed by information regarding different issues that happen in their day-to-day activities. Also, they are pleased by the good reviews of media but along with its swift development are other effects that harm the environment and the people living in it.Kaiser Family Foundation’s study shows that between the age of eight and eighteen, most kids and teens nowadays are glued to any forms of media. Media is a broad topic to discuss.

It may include the traditional media and the social media.Traditional Media, which until now is being used, includes television (TV), radio and print. In the study, kids and teens consume seven hours and thirty eight minutes a day facing the television, listening to the radio and scanning magazines or newspapers simultaneously. Before the advent of the modern technologies, teenagers opted to spend their free time in watching the television instead of making their assignments, spending time with their families and socializing with others. Watching too much television can lead to poor eyesight, obesity, headaches and other sicknesses.

Furthermore, there are TV shows and radio programs that present violent and malicious acts or topics which may influence the viewers and listeners, especially if they are not appropriately guided. What they will see or hear may not be eliminated in their minds and there is a possibility that they will put it into practice.On the other hand, Social media is a countless array of internet based tools and platforms. It is fast changing and it takes on many different forms, including social networking sites (e.

g. Facebook, MySpace), blogs and micro blogs (e.g. Twitter), content communities (e.g. YouTube, Flickr), virtual worlds (e.

g. Second Life), social gaming, podcasts, and wikis, to name a few. These platforms and sites have created online communities where people can share as much or as little personal information as they desire with other members.Nowadays teenagers are very much in the "fast-forwarded" state of living.

Parents and guardians must cope with the fast pace society most especially that prevalent technologies are very much present and widespread. In social media, one of the most used platforms is Facebook. It has been the trend for teenagers in keeping touch with their family and friends. In a plenary talk entitled, "Poke Me: How Social Networks Can Both Help and Harm Our Kids," Larry D. Rosen, PhD, professor of psychology at California State University, discussed potential adverse effects.

He shared that teenagers who use Facebook more often show more narcissistic tendencies.It can also be distracting and can negatively impact learning. Many teenagers rely on the accessibility of information on social media, the web in general to provide answers for their home works and school projects, and on television and radio to be in touch with the happenings in society. Daily overuse of media and technology has a negative effect on the health and habits of all children, preteens and teenagers. It makes them more prone to anxiety, depression, and other psychological disorders.

It also ruins their good habits towards school works or projects.The researchers propose that television, radio and social media, carry more detrimental effects to teenagers. The researchers choose this study for they want to know the possible alternatives or solutions that will lessen the negative effects of the selected media. They believe that being a communicator also requires them to be aware of what their field brings and offers to the public, especially to the teenagers.Television, Radio and social media bring more detrimental effects to the youth of today.
