A nation’s future is dependent on the ability of its children to become innovators and bring a substantial change for the economy. The world has become a global village, the need for advanced communication skills, knowledge and expertise is growing rapidly.
Parents strive to give their child the best education by sending them to the best possible schools. A child’s achievement starts developing at home with the encouragement and support of parents at the right place and the right time, it helps to builds ones confidence and personality which is a key to success in the long run.A study was carried out in Canada which indicated that there are students who comes from all over the world to study in Canadian schools. Canada has almost half of its students that are not born in Canada.
Therefore they all come from different cultures, family backgrounds and religion. These differences tend to act as challenge for school administrators who want to give each student an equal opportunity to develop. It was seen that due to these reasons the students were scoring differently.A child coming from a family which has come from a refugee camp and is worried about its food and survival has seen life in a different way in contrast with a child coming from a family where acquiring education is important and so is becoming a doctor, engineer or lawyer (Brown, 2008). It is on the system to recognize its failure in terms of eliminating such barriers in student’s development and achievement.
No matter where the child comes from either a low or high family income or its origin is from a different nation where there is different language spoken, these are minor issues and should be dealt with accordingly. It is on the institution to over come these barriers and one way to do this is to give ones teachers the training to deal with immigrant students . Native intelligence can not act as a hindrance in the success of the student. No American, African, Asian or a Chinese is inferior or superior to one another once they are on the same platform gathered together to learn. The school board plays a vital role in the improvement of student achievement. This may include hiring of capable, trained and motivated staff who knows their duty and what they are here for.
The board needs to provide a working environment which assists the students with proper planning and monitoring of the results along with teachers evaluation. The school board tends to develop an environment of mutual trust and understanding where they can involve the society, parents, organizations and government in order to fulfill their part of responsibility of student achievement (Leaders Chart Progress, 2008). By recognizing and appreciating good work, it gives room for improvement and hard work to students. This appreciation can be in a form of verbal appraisal or scholarships. There are many different kinds of scholarships awarded to students by the institutions, governments or business organizations. These kinds of scholarships recognize student’s achievement and motivate them in order to live up to that expectation of the reward they got.
Positive reinforcement is essential for every human being at every step of life. Similarly students tend to look for such support in little things at institutions by getting an A grade in a certain course, elected as the class president or getting the best student of the year award. It depends on the schools that how they plan all this and make room for such things in their academic calendar (Garrone & Francine, 2008). When D.
C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty took over the office he came up with a list of things that were to be done in order to improve student achievement. The list included factors such as revised syllabus of school, refurnish of the school building and sports faculties, spacious class rooms and the number of art and music teacher in the school to be increased, the quality of lectures to be very strong, moreover the increased usage of technology in order to generate better results.
His focus on the next two years was to improve student achievement that is why he took some concrete steps in order to achieve this goal. He knew what he was doing, his goals were clearly defined and above all he believed in himself. This is how effective leaders are made (Sims & David, 2008). John Norton of the East High School introduced a standardized dress code. A lot of parents did not agree to his idea in the first place.
However he believed that uniforms would reduce discipline problems, save money, and improve grades. Moreover it will show equality among students as it would eliminate the difference of class among students which is true in a way. But this kind of changes only work if everyone is willing to abide by the rules and accept is willingly else such efforts can go in vain (White & Schafer, 2008). Assessments of students facilitate in not only judging the effectiveness of the student but also the institution in order to make it a better place to study . Therefore it can be seen that student achievement involves everyone in it starting from the parents. However later on it depends on the amount of interest the parents take in their children’s life which is very important as students may need their guidance in some of the crucial decisions of their life.
The institution is a formal place where the child goes in order to acquire education; this is one of the reasons why parents are so concerned about sending their children to the best schools because that’s the foundation on which the whole structure would stand eventually. The quality of education there, the teachers, friends, principal even the working environment everything has its own significance in a students achievement and future.Together when all these factors gel together and aim towards the achievement of a common goal which is giving the student an opportunity to learn everyday, only then the institutions are able to contribute towards the students development and give its nation a prosperous and healthy future and economy as today’s students are the leaders of tomorrow, their achievement is the achievement of the whole nation in the long term. The student should realize this and make the most of their time and effort by understanding their responsibility at the right time.
