Good afternoon to you all, My name is Father Lucien I am a fifty (50) years old priest. I have one (1) brother and one (1) sister. I was born in London,England and immigrated to Canada East when I was ten (10) Years old.
I lived in Montreal with family. My Father fought against the Fenain's Raid to protect the British North America (BNA) from being taken over by the Irish and help the British, but sadly passed away. I was the first member of my family to become a priest. I recently became interested in politics after I heard about Confederation.I now Represent the Conservatives.
I am pretty sure you all have thought about Confederation, But I am here to say it is a horrid idea to join together as a nation. If Canada East joins we will lose our way of life ,Taxes will go up and that will make the poverty rate go up, the taxes would not support the farmers, we might have a massive conflict with the Natives or even a war The representation by population would make the English Speaking Canadians have more say in the government and the House of Commons and will dominate us French speaking Canadians.For these vile reasons I think Confederation is a Horrid idea for Canada East(French Speaking Canadians) My main reason for not joining Confederation is losing our French culture. Do you really want Canada West and Maritime (English Speaking Canadians) provinces to take over our French Culture??? If we join Confederation all of our French Rights would be lost, The Roman Catholic and everything else will be lost. The English Speaking Canadians will slowly take over our culture and our province.
Soon it will be gone, Even the French speaking Canadians.Even if their was a Federal government to preserve our culture it would not be any good . The Central government Would be too strong for us and take our culture away from us. If we made French our second (2) main language. It would not be any good everyone would speak French, But Only twenty (20%) Percent of the people would actually be French.
That would not preserve our culture, It would only perverse our language. We French-speaking Canadians will have to stand stand up for ourselves and our culture in the near Future My second Reason for not Confederation is the higher taxes from theInter-colonial Railway and the taxes not supporting the farmers. I do not understand why were wasting millions of dollars for a Railway That might increase our economic system by like ten percent(10%) ,But I know why it is worth spending millions for this railway. The only provinces it is going to benefit are Canada West And Nova Scotia and new Brunswick.
All the other provinces would just be wasting money for a railway they do not need or might increases economy by like Five (5%) percent, But the way I see it is just a waste of time and money.If there are more taxes the poverty rate will go up. The taxes only support the road and railway, but not the farmers. If the taxes do not support the farmers the food supply would quickly decreases and the demand would be higher and soon it would cause a economic disaster. Food is key to survival without it or farmers everyone would Starve to death and die. I am sure none of you want this to happen.
So go against confederation. My third reason for not joining Confederation is having major conflicts with natives.If we join together as a colony we would have to expand our border into Rupert's Land for farm land. If we do expand Canada to Rupert's Land for farm land the Natives who live there would not be very happy. They would lose their land and would be scared . We would take over Rupert's Land ,So they would lose their culture.
That will cause the Natives to Rebel against Canada and not give land. It will cause to a major conflict Between the Canadians and Natives. I am sure of you like wars so go against confederation.My last reason for not joining confederation is the representation by population. First of all the English -speaking Canadians would not agree on anything we French would have a little say in the government and the House of Commons. Canada West has twenty four ( 24) Seats in the government and the Maritime provinces combined have twenty four (24) seats in total.
Canada East would have twenty four (24) seats. We would be outnumbered by twenty four (24)!!!! In the House of Commons Canada West would have eighty two (82) and the Maritime provinces combined would have forty nine (49) Seats.So in the House of Commons we would be outnumbered by Fifty(50) or even more!!!!! We French speaking Canadians deserve our rights and will have say in the government, the House of Commons, and the Parliament. In conclusion, Canada East will never join confederation Because the French Canadians will lose our culture, rights, get higher taxes, poverty rate higher, might have a war with the Natives, A bad economy, the representation by population would make the French-speaking Canadians have no say in the government and the House of Commons.If we do not join confederation I will assure you we will French SpeakingCwill have our rights, say in government and the House of Commons, preserve our culture, cheaper taxes and no conflicts with the Natives.
As you see Confederation is a horrid idea, so do not sell our country(Canada East) to Confederation and say no to Confederation !!!!
