When I first examined “Border Crossing,” the first thing I noticed was that the man was carrying a woman on his shoulders.

I also noticed that the two people were Mexican. This statue by Jose Jimenez is said to be endorsing illegal immigration on campus. It had been rumored that organizations had been trying to do away with the statue. The statue is not meant to be offensive or promote illegal immigration. It is meant to tell the story of a man crossing into another country in the search for a better lifestyle. By the title of the statue I was able to assume that both of these people were crossing the border from Mexico into the United States.

The woman that the man is carrying on his shoulders is holding a baby. She holds the baby close to her body as if she is sheltering it from the dangers of crossing the border. The artist created this statue to represent his father crossing into the United States border in order to provide a better living lifestyle for his family. Mexicans crossing the border illegally don’t mean to harm any Americans. They’re crossing the border to have better opportunities.

The United States provides people with a lot more opportunities than Mexico. It had better education, security, health care, and so on. Mexican people to this day are moving to the United States for better life opportunities. With Mexico being so dangerous, people feel the need now more than ever to start moving their families away from the border.

Although they may have trouble settling into the United States at first, they know that it will be worth it in the future. Their children are provided with better opportunities for their future. The fact that their children are provided with more safety here is also a huge factor to why more Mexican people are moving to the United States.
