Not anything else but the experiment of cultivating seeds in different soils is the brightest memory of my primary school years. Ever since then, I really enjoyed studying natural sciences. Taking Biology Higher Level course has given me the deeper understanding of the processes of life around me. Nevertheless, lots of new areas of growth have opened to me, too; and I am determined to extent my knowledge further.Since the tenth grade, I have been attending two extramural scientists' schools, 'Pazinimas' and 'National Students Academy'.
Education there is organized into sessions, composed of lectures, practice in the laboratory and exams; during which I have found myself the most involved in the molecular biology and genetics fields. Steve Jones 'The Language of Genes' is the book that gave me the insight of how significant and intriguing the processes in the cells' nuclei are. I started to read more about genetic modification, and its applications in medicine. It was very interesting to visit local Cardiology Institute where post doctorates are investigating how stem cells could be applied for patients with cardiopulmonary diseases.
During the excursion, I learned how DNA is scanned for inconsistencies, and how TIRF microscope is used to observe the activity of sodium and calcium ions within the cells' membranes.Recently I have participated in one of the most successful biotechnologies company's in Europe, 'Fermentas', career session for the twelve graders. From various possible fields of practice, I chose the investigation into the proteins expression of the E. Coli cells. In the real industrial laboratory I was enabled to the unique opportunity to run the polymerase chain reaction and use the gel electrophoresis technique. Besides the field work, I listened to various lectures, including ones about determination of the protein structure, plant genetics and cloning.
In general, the experience with which I came back from this career session has reminded me once more how extraordinary accurate, yet fascinating, scientific work is. This is something I am willing to perform myself someday in the future. As a diligent and focused student, I maintain decent grades in the International Baccalaureate class as well as have a role in the school's community. Being the class representative in the Student Board got me involved in school's events where I developed skills as a team leader, and even an artist. I also belong to the Lithuanian Scouting Organization for almost ten years.
Together with my venture scouts troop, I have donated blood to the National Blood Centre, organized a few charities to the Trakai Child Care Home and participated in local environmental protection actions. During the summer I worked full-time at a lawyer office where I improved my organizational and creativity skills because of working at the reception, designing employee cards and training new assistants. Working there has helped me to become more independent and self-confident.With my studies aside, I enjoy doing visual arts, which has led me to the painting classes, and I have even become a laureate in several arts competitions. My ongoing hobby is playing classical guitar; actually, I have been playing in a duet in the musical school for almost four years.
I am an enthusiastic skier and every winter I go to the skiing practice camps in mountains, which is also exciting because of my passion for traveling. Besides that I regularly play badminton with my dad and go to the swimming pool as I used to practice swimming at my earlier age.I firmly believe that my experiences and values, such as devotion, leadership, self-esteem and liability, would definitely help me to deal with the new challenges, find my niche at university's community and get the strong educational background for the successful career.
