Domestic violence is a term used to define domination in a relationship. Physical violence is casually involved in relationships where one tries to control the other. Most of the time, women are the victims of this violence. Different factors have been considered in the occurrence of domestic violence within a relationship. However, the involvement of alcohol and drug abuse in domestic violence has been proven to be two different problems. Before, it is believed that domestic violence happens when one is intoxicated with drugs or under the influence of alcohol due to number of reports where the batterers are not sober.

Other cases that have been reported shows that it is not only women, but also children who experience such abuse within a family. However, further studies revealed that domestic violence is not associated with drug and alcohol abuse. Studies show that not all people become violent when they abuse drugs or alcohol. Most of the time, perpetrators abuse alcohol and drugs in order for them to escape the despair they are experiencing due to their status in life or they have too much insecurities from their partners.Frustrations become one of the reasons of their despair so they feel the need to let it out when intoxicated with drugs and drunk.

Being addictive to drugs and alcohol is a different problem from battering. Domestic violence is due to factors such as sexual violence, intimidation, economic status, and insecurities. It is a socially learned behavior according to experts.Being violent is something that they have learned in order to cope up with anything that lacks them in life. Anger triggers the emotions that may cause the perpetrator to act violently that is why when inside the house, the family members are the ones who suffer.

According to McCurdy, B.T. (2010), perpetrators always blame the incidents on the effects of influence of alcohol and drugs when they committed violence. According to them, heavy drinking makes the control of behavior difficult (Collins, J.

J and Spencer, D.L. 2002). They thought that being drunk can be an excuse for acting violently.

As a matter of fact, their dependencies on drug and alcohol are the concern because this is where the behavior is developed. They feel strong and think that they can control anyone in the family by being violent that is why the behavior is being learned and developed. Therefore, domestic violence is not cause by alcohol and drugs abuse. Abusers will often get violent but there will never be no evidence that it will stop. They can become violent whether they are intoxicated or sober.

There are cases of domestic violence where the perpetrators are reported to be sober even before the incidents happened, which again proves that the two matters are not relative to each other. Domestic violence and drug and alcohol abuse frequently occurs at the same incident and may become repetitive but it is concluded that there is no casual relationship between them.ReferenceAll-Kiski Hope Center (2004).
