Denis Ilvin, the senior vice president for strategy and commercial of Air Bridge Cargo (ABC) Airlines, claims that Russia’s share in the global air cargo industry would increase from 1.4% to 8% in 2015 and to 16% by 2030.

At the Russia & CIS Aircraft Conference in Moscow, he said that despite the decrease in revenue generated from passenger flights, air cargo’s rise has not let up, and the forecasted growth rate up to 2025 is somewhere between 5.4% and 7.1%, stronger than that of any other region in the world.According to Ilvin, an 8 to 10% growth in demand for cargo planes would be seen until 2020. This means Russia needs 76 freighters by 2020 including 25 Boeing 747’s.

Because of the increased demand, Russia is developing two new facilities, one in Moscow which connects Russia to the East, and the other in Krasnoyarsk which connects Russia to the West. ABC is the first cargo Russian airline of its kind to offer scheduled services in Europe, Asia, and of course, Russia. North America is not that far off, for they expect to extend their services to North America this year.CommentsI was not at all surprised about Russia’s increased share in $80 billion air cargo market.

They have always been the leader when it comes to air cargo. In fact, the Russians have the biggest plane in the world—The Antonov 225.This cargo plane can carry up to 250 tonnes (BBC News). Surprisingly, this plane is more than a decade old as it was first utilized during the Soviet regime. This fact alone is a telltale sign of Russia’s dominance in the air cargo industry. The numbers are outstanding despite being just predictions.

16% growth in a matter of 20 years is a lot considering the business is a multi-billion dollar industry.ReferencesBBC. (2001, May 7). World’s biggest plane flies again. BBC News. Retrieved March 25,2009, from http://news.
