The majority rule is a method used to organize the government and a way to decide on the undergoing issues in public. However, this governing power does not necessarily mean as another way of domination or tyranny.
Through the majority rule, the voices of the minority or the people can be spoken and had the opportunity to be heard. This is how the rule of majority in a democratic government works. This does not necessarily means that through the rule of majority, the control of the government can be put in hand, but rather another way of how to making the democratic government to function. It may be true that some of the decisions the minority put up, or decisions made by a single individual may result a poorer quality or even worse kind of decision which can then turn to being the cause of greater malevolence. The best interest for all the people might then be achieved through the process of decision making involving a larger section and not just by a single party.Minority RightsThe minorities are those individuals who had been said to be of different ethnicity, beliefs in accordance with their religions, their geographical locations, the level of their incomes, or just those individuals who had lost in the elections or debates on politics.
The minority rights covers these fundamental human rights in which there could be no government or governing rule of the majority must get rid off. Those minorities or any individual must have the freedom in expressing their voice or simple the freedom of speech. They must also have the right to choose their own religion and their beliefs. In addition to that, the minorities’ rights include the equality in the due process and protection each individual must have in accordance with the law.
The free will in organizing, disagreeing, and participating in the public and their society are also the rights of the minority.Relationship between the Majority Rule and Minority RightsThe democratic government through majority rule must and has the responsibility of protecting the human rights or the rights of minorities. In return, the trust to the government of protecting the minority rights and the protection of their self-identity must be put up by the minorities.Accomplishing these conditions will result to the participation of these kinds of groups to the government and can make contributions to the democratic institutions of their country (USINFO, 2007).Furthermore, there is an unspoken tasks for the government (under majority rule) of giving protection to the minority rights which can result to the upholding of their cultural identities, enhanced performance in the public, develops each individual’s consciences, and involving and improving their religious activities and beliefs (USINFO, 2007).
Majority Rule, Minority Rights in the U.S. ConstitutionIn Article 1, Section 2 of the Constitution of the United States of America, found there that “the people’s house” referring to The House of Representatives, which says that each members of The House of Representatives must be elected by the people (voters) through the process of election which applies the majority rule, and must be done after the two-year term (Senate, 2007).And in Article 1, Section 8, written there that The Congress has the governing power over the minorities, in collecting taxes and providing defense for the nation including the human rights (Senate, 2007).Majority Rule with respect for Minority RightsDuring elections, each and every voter of the United States of America has the right to choose and express their choice through the process of election (Senate, 2007).
Another instance with which the majority rule and with respect to minority rights apply is when the minority has proposals for the government and was approved by the majority rule, it is the responsibility and duty of the minority to comply and obey the rules held by the government (Eyler Robert Coates, 99).ConclusionThe majority rule and minority rights seemed to be two contrasting principles of a democratic government which is also, in fact, the very foundation of the government. For the democratic government of the United States to work properly, the ruling power has to be placed to the majority while having the responsibility of protecting the individual and their minority rights while the minorities must put their trust to the government that their rights will be protected. If these conditions were achieved, the result will be the participation of minority groups to the government which can make contributions to the democratic institutions of their country.ReferencesEyler Robert Coates, S.
