In today's world, there Is so much going on around us that we do not get enough time to think about what we are actually doing. Everything just seems to fly by us and if we look back to re-think and analyze we are sure to fall behind. Emotional Intelligence is a part of us which allows us to make decisions based on our emotions. It's the part of us which we don't always have time to bring out.
However, if we practice to put it to use, It can help us make better decisions, analyze and understand our own and other's emotions better.Throughout this report, I will be giving examples from my own experiences that I have come across throughout my life and some newly acquired improvements since I started this course. Emotional Intelligence has four main aspects: Perceiving emotions, using emotions to facilitate thoughts, understanding emotions, and managing emotions. However, we will exclude managing emotions from this report. Aspect#l - Self-awareness The first aspect on our list which we will look at Is perceiving emotions. This part of the El (Emotional Intelligence) Is about realizing your own emotions, or In other rods, being self-aware.
We usually don't think about every little emotion we have on a given day, but everyone has a main point of emotional change at least a few times in a day. You might be upset at one point about how your boss treated you and the next moment you are extremely happy because you won the lottery and don't have to work anymore. These are emotions which automatically come to you following an event that happened, but have you ever really taken some time to analyze what those emotions really are? Or how they affect you? Personally, I have always been the kind f person who always over-analyzes everything, including my own thoughts and emotions. In this communications class, I was able to build on to what already knew. This course taught me better ways to understand my emotions and to understand what makes me who I am today.
The awareness exercises I did, allowed me to break all my senses to have a better understanding and to analyze each and every one of them more closely, Including hearing (listening Intensively), seeing (realizing things In details), tasting,'smelling (distinguish flavors/scents), and also physical states tenseness of the body, etc. ).Continuous practice of self-awareness exercises can give you a higher sense of understanding towards your emotions and make you more self-aware. Journal related to first aspect: Awareness Practice: Day 1 - Setting 1: Bus Hard to concentrate for a long period of time Noises of the bus are amplified Day 1 - Setting 2: On bed Complete silence Hard not to fall asleep Day 2 - Setting 1: Library/Lab Amplified conversations Notice the clicking of computer mice all around me Day 2 - Setting 2: In the kitchen Hear the sizzling of food being cooked on panSmell all the different ingredients Feel the warmth of the stove Aspect#2 - Using emotions to facilitate thinking The second aspect of Emotional Intelligence which we will look at is using emotions to facilitate thoughts. This might not be so clear to what is really involved, but let me explain. After the first part of the E', one should be able to realize what emotions are present at a given time.
Now it might be a good thing to know your emotions, but it's somewhat pointless if you are not using that information in any way or form. Well truth is needed for this part of the El.An average person does not include their emotions when thinking about stuff. Mainly because emotions and thoughts are two separate things. But fact is, they can be combined, and usually this tends to allow a person to have a more clear way to distinguish right from wrong.
In this course, we did not so much get into this aspect of combining thoughts with emotions; however, being able to succeed in self-awareness is a main point in this second aspect. In other words, if you are self-aware and are able to realize your emotions, then your thoughts are already influenced by your emotions. It comes durably if you are a self-aware person. An example of using emotions with your thoughts is when you are thinking about your significant other.
Let's say you are planning to see him/her after a long time today and want to buy her a gift. Your thought's are that you should get her something simple, because your budget is low. However, your emotions tell you that you love her and you're happy to see her so you end up buying her a million dollar ring. In conclusion, it is possible to combine your thoughts with your emotions; it can take good thoughts better, but also make bad thoughts worse.
