Chapter 1 Introduction Nature and Background of the Study Cellphone is a modern device and a powerful tool for communication. As what we know, almost every Filipino owns a cellphone. This is because cellular phones are very handy and convenient to use and greatly help in linking people from in and outside of the country.
Certainly, the main function of cellular phones is to help communicate effectively through calls and texts. In effect, a lot of telecommunication networks aroused and is continuing to develop and enhance their services for the people to patronize. Abot natin ang mundo”, at least that’s what the Globe telecom says. Globe telecom is one of the widely known telecommunication networks that tend to deliver enhancement of people’s communication mediums. Along with Globe Company are Sun Cellular, Smart, Touch Mobile and Red mobile companies.
As the world revolves around, trends are also flowing at a fast rate. Who wants to be left out in this trend setting generation? Demands for cellular phones increase, so as modernization of cellular phones are highly dependent to the development of new technologies. That is how fascinating and influential cellular phones are.But now, one of the factors that affect the level of academic performance of the students is using cellular phones. Students could not focus very well on their lessons during class discussion due to they are very busy texting or even chatting with their friends or textmates. They do not listen attentively to what their teacher says in front that’s why they get low or sometimes failing grades in their subjects.
And also, they cannot answer the teacher’s question confidently because of the interruption that there is a text message coming from their cellular phones. On the other hand, they give importance on their cellular phones rather than giving or paying attention on their lessons. This is what the researcher seen and observed in this real scenario that’s why he comes up with this study. Technology has had such an influential impact on the way we function in our personal and professional lives whether it be e-mailing, faxing, or getting lost in our own little world with our ipod. Though we have had many technological advances over the years, there is one that I feel stands out above the rest and that is the cell phone. This one device has improved our lives in so many ways like being able to communicate with people at anytime, checking e-mails, and texting.
It has also negatively impacted our lives in that it has been proven to increase the chances of getting cancer, some people feel lost without their cell phones and can not pay attention when using them which could and has ultimately caused death. Everywhere you go, you can see people on their cellphones. It has become a way of life. Statement of the ProblemThe research study merely focused on the effects of cellphone on the Academic Performance of Freshmen High School Students of Mindoro State College of Agriculture and Technology- main campus.
Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions: 1. Is there a relationship between cellphone and the academic performance of the students? 2. Is there a relationship between the students’ academic performance and the length of time of using cellphone? 3. Is there a relationship between the students’ academic performance and the length of time for studying? 4.Is students’ academic performance interrupted by having cellphone in doing their homework? Significance of the Topic The significance of this study is to determine the factors that affect the level of performance of the students who are cellphone users.
The information generated from this study may guide all the students who always get low grades in their every subject matter. The researcher will guide and help them to realize the importance of education on their lives that they should first prioritize their studies than using cellphones. Having cell phones is not really bad.As what we know it helps us to easily communicate people who are living in such far places.
But we should not make it a habit because of the bad effects that we could get from it. There several factors arise specially in the poor performance shown by students in a class. Students should give importance in their studies. They should learn also how to value and manage their time effectively to avoid conflict on their studies.
Chapter II Related Literature This chapter presents the related literature-local and foreign which helped the researcher conceptualize the effects of cell phone use of students during classes. In addition to the related literature are local and foreign studies that helped the researcher in the analysis of the problems under study. It has provided an insight to enrich this investigation and understanding of the study’s problem. Foreign Literature In today's world, most people communicate through the use cellular phones.
It's hard to believe that fifteen years ago cell phones were a rarity. People may not be aware of what is the history chronicling the dawn of the cell phone to its current state. According to www. symatech.
net, the history of cell phone truly began with the creation of radio technology.Two-way radios were, after all, the ancestors of the cell phone. It wasn’t until the 1950s that what people would recognize as a cell phone was created. These were the cell phones that allowed direct dialing. These phones, called the MTA for Mobile Telephone System A, were created by Erickson and were released in 1956 in Sweden. They were very heavy and bulky, and the phones were usually stalled in cars.
Only about 150 people used the MTA system. In 1957, Leonid Kupriyanovich created the radiophone, or a wearable mobile phone, in the USSR.These phones required a base station to operate, but each base station could be used by several customers. His phone weighed only 0. 5 kg, making it much more portable than the MTA. The First Generation, or 1G, or the first truly portable cellular phone began in 1983.
It was called the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X. The FCC approved it for use in the United States. Motorola developed the technology for cellular phones for decades and this particular phone took 15 years to come to market at an expense of over 100 million dollars in research costs. The DynaTAC800X as extremely lightweight for its time. Before the 80s, owning a telephone line is like having one’s own Mercedes Benz. People use telephones as a sign of status in the society.
When a person is lined, he/she is rich, an elite member of the community. During those times, only the privileged have phones. Many would apply for a phone line, and application process can take up to 5 years, only to find out they have been rejected. In the 80s, the market became more accommodating and new telephone companies made their industry debut. New lines began operating and franchises were allowed nationwide.
In the early 90s, about 2 of every 10 Filipino families have landline phones, with most of the lines located in Metro Manila. Less than 1 out of 10 owns a mobile phone, then appearing like a smaller version of military radiophones, but still bulky in today's standards. Provinces still lag behind in the race during that time. The lack of telephone lines in provincial homes became a viable business for calling centers.
They enjoyed these markets up to the first few years of the 21st century. And then a few years more, the cell phone age reached its peak.More carriers, lower fees, lesser restrictions, wider coverage. Even kids have their own phones now. Landline subscription started to decline as people become more mobile, wanting to bring with them their phones thus opting for a mobile phone than a stationary one.
Because of the broad scope of Telecommunications, the group has decided to tackle only the mobile or wireless communications as the main topic. Currently, the market is dominated by the Big Three in the Wireless Telecom industry namely, Smart Telecommunications, Inc. , Globe Telecom, Inc. , and Digitel Mobile Philippines, Inc. r otherwise known as Sun Cellular.
Many people have been stuck behind that person who is consistently going 10 miles below the speed limit and applying the brake for apparently no reason. When you get the opportunity to pass them you see a cell phone up to their ear. This is very common and has been the cause of thousands of accidents across the country. Just recently the state of New Jersey has made it a law that people cannot use hand held cell phones while driving (Star Ledger Feb. 27 2008). But by making this law will it make the roads safer? According o Russ Radar who is a spokesman for the Insurance Institute for highway safety, “the research is there’s no difference in the level of distraction between using handheld and hands free phones.
” The New Jersey police reported over 3,500 accidents involving cell phones in 2006. Among those accidents, the number involving hands free and handheld phones were evenly split 1,854 to 1,726 (Star Ledger 2008). Not only do people use their cell phone while driving, they also use it while walking down the street, in the store, even in the bathroom. All of this cell phone use not only has an impact on your monthly bill but on your health as well.
Chapter III Methodology Survey method was used by the researcher to determine the relationship between cellphone and the academic performance of the freshmen high school students of Mindoro State College of Agriculture and Technology main campus. Statistical analysis was also used by the researcher to consolidate, correlate and interpret all the data gathered. Questionnaire will be use to conduct this study to gather all the needed information. The researcher will provide questions to be answered by the selected respondents and this study will be conducted also in the said institution located at Alcate, Victoria, Oriental Mindoro. The researcher will give the questions personally to all the respondents.
The questionnaires will retrieve by the researcher after each of the respondents has accomplished them. The researcher will make sure that all the questionnaires are answered properly and honestly by all the respondents. By that, the researcher will obtained authentic results of the study.
