Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Computer Assisted Therapy/Cyber Counseling Ivy Tech Community College 2013 Cognitive behaviorism therapy would be useful in substance abuse counseling because it is effective in treating Anxiety, Depression, Phobias, Obsessive- Compulsive Disorder, Panic Disorders, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Research has showed that it is very useful when treating Anxiety and Depression. There are some disadvantages to this theory such as, the clients must be willing to help themselves. Computer-Assisted Therapy/ Cyber Counseling would not be a theory would benefit a absence abuse client long term.
It does not five the doctor patient relationship that Is known as "therapeutic alliance" therefore would not be very beneficial to the counseling process. There are some things that are beneficial in this theory such as that there Is not as long of a wait for this type of counseling and It Is using less costly. Clients for many reasons. This theory has be proven effective in treating many disorders such as anxiety, depression, phobias, obsessive compulsive disorders, panic disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Research has proven it to be ere effective in treating anxiety and depression. This type of therapy is usually short term which is very helpful too lot of client. There are also no side effects as there would be with drug therapy or other types of therapies. Cognitive behavioral therapy also focuses on a specific problem which can increase the chance of positive results. Cognitive behavioral therapy is also more affordable then other types of therapies. There are some disadvantages with Cognitive behavioral therapy.
The clients must want to help themselves; while the therapist can motivate the clients they cannot do he work for the client. Cognitive behavioral therapy is not a quick fix to a problem or issue. The client also needs to confront the anxiety or problems and this may temporarily increase their anxiety. Cognitive behavioral therapy works to change the irrational thoughts and beliefs of the client that may be causing them harm. Cognitive behavioral therapy is known as a talking therapy that focuses on cognitive "thought" processes. The client will learn how to identify and change destructive or disturbing thought patterns that has a negative influence on their behavioral.
It can consist of one on one session, group sessions, or a combination of both of these. The sessions usually last between thirty to sixty minutes. The amount of sessions depends on the client and severity of the problem. Homework is usually given at the end of each session this may be to keep a diary and write in it at different times.
I think that this theory would work very well with many different types of clients and situations. I plan on working with substance and alcohol abuse clients and when working with this clients you may be working with several different issues. This hurry allows you to create a treatment plan that would help with most of these issues. Aaron T.Beck in (1963, 1964,and 1967) did seminal investigations and writings about thinking and depression which began to expand our horizons and also permanently alter the landscape of cognitive therapy. There were many earlier ideas and elements of the cognitive viewpoint that had roots reaching deeply into historical evolution of psychology it was mainly Allis's ideas and Beck's research findings that made up what we call today cognitive therapy.
Proponents of Cognitive behavioral therapy believe that if the subconscious thoughts re brought out into the open then the client can be taught how to stop reinforcing their negative thought patterns. After that is done the state of mind which he sustains can begin to be resolved. Some of the proponents of cognitive behavioral transshipments of CB believe that if subconscious thoughts are brought out into the open and the client can be taught how to stop reinforcing his negative thought patterns, then the state of mind which he sustains can begin to be resolved would be those who helped establish the theory. Albert Ellis, Aaron T. Beck, and Washier are all proponents of this theory.
While Computer Assisted Therapy [Cyber Counseling has good things about it is not a theory that I would use when working with substance abuse clients.Computer Assisted Therapy/ Cyber Counseling has been shown to help clients remain abstinent for a significant longer time then those who only use other traditional counseling techniques. There are many counselors who lack the time and/or training that is needed to successfully implement cognitive-behavioral therapy so a properly established computer program can help supplement their training. This theory works well with those clients who cannot afford traditional therapy sessions.
They also may not be able to find a type of therapy that fits into their schedule.A regular counseling session may take too long or may be unavailable because of insurance or other reasons. They may also think that they have already tried everything else but in realty haven't or haven't put their whole heart into it. They may also not like the idea of sitting and talking about their problems with someone therefore computer assisted therapy work better with them. Computer Assisted Therapy/ Cyber Counseling is teeter than there not being any therapy at all.
There are many disadvantages that I found with the computer assisted therapy/ cyber counseling. The major disadvantage is that it takes away the importance of the relationship between counselor and clients. This relationship is known as "therapeutic alliance" and is very important to the counseling process. Those who try Computer Assisted Therapy/ Cyber Counseling and it doesn't work then believe that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and possible other types of therapy will not work.
They try this type of therapy instead of using a live therapist that they could afford and see n a couple of weeks and mostly likely have a more of a benefit of counseling. Signed to teach drug and alcohol abusers the skills that are needed to change their behavioral. The program may ask the client a series of questions to determine the things or situations that may trigger their anxiety they may lead to drug use. The computer program then develops a treatment program that is based on the responses the client makes. The main reason that I would not use this theory is because it takes away from the "therapeutic alliance" I would otherwise make with my clients.
To me this is a very important part of the counseling process. Also for Computer- Assisted Therapy/ Cyber Counseling the client has to be truthful and honesty for it to work. I think that especially with drug abuse clients this would be very difficult. They also have to have to the drive to act out the counseling program on their own. Computer-Assisted Therapy/Cyber Counseling was hypothesized that in the 21st century.
It was determined that computers would be used as therapeutic assistants and possibly even as the primary therapeutic agent. Elise was computer that was programmed to give Regain responses to the clients.Plato is system that enervates strategies to help deal with the dilemmas and also gives clients feedback to their solutions. As the computer system advance it gives more memory to be able to sub stain more complex programs. This allows the internet and virtual reality to be used.
Keelhauled M. Carroll is supporter of Computer-Assisted Therapy/ Cyber Counseling. She is a professor of psychiatry and the lead author of one of the computer- assisted therapy. She believes that computer- assisted programs can be valuable because of cognitive-behavioral therapy is not always widely available for the treatment of drug and alcohol abuse.
