Use a specific example in your answer. A great example of how America used economic opportunities to influence control over other nations was the Dollar Diplomacy.
The Dollar Diplomacy is the use of a country's financial power to extend its international influence. And America did Just that. And when you lend someone money you would most likely expect hem to pay you back.
America was paid back by the country they were helping , let the U. S have more influence in their nation. This strategy was also used to keep European powers out of the Caribbean and to strengthen the U. S relations in the Caribbean and elsewhere.

The Spanish-American War took place in 1898 and was the start of American Imperialism.
This war was caused by a series of events. One was the use of yellow journalism in William Randolph Heart's New York Journal and Joseph Pulitzer New York World. These two newspapers used yellow Journalism to depict General Valerian Wheeler's acts in Cuba such as the concentration camps he created. This brought much sympathy amongst Americans and swayed them towards pro war.Another event was the De Loom Letter in which Unripe Deputy De Loom, the Spanish minister, wrote to the United States.
This letter was meant to be private but a Cuban rebel stole it and leaked it to the newspapers. In this letter Unripe criticized President William McKinley. The Spanish apologized but Americans were still upset at the insults made to their president in the letter. Another major event that caused the Spanish-American War was the explosion of the U.
S. S Maine on February 15, 1898 in the harbor of Havana.Americans blamed this tragic event on the Spanish, and combined with the other events, it made American want to get involved in the war. The United States declared war on April 20, 1898. During this war the Americans first attacked in the Philippines. The Spanish-American War increased the Imperialistic attitude in America by allowing them to gain some more territory and by increasing their belief to help a place that is in need.
In the Treaty of Paris Spain freed Cuba gave the U. S the islands of Guam and Puerco Rich and sold the Philippines to the U.S for $20 million. Gaining these territories allowed the U. S to further American influence. The construction of the Panama Canal opened the U.
S. A influence in trade. By the time Theodore Roosevelt became president of the United States himself and a majority of American believed that they needed to build a canal that cut through Central American. Doing so would reduce the travel time and cost for commercial and military ships by allowing them to go through a shortcut between nee Atlantic Ana Paschal corners. I newer were to pitons to Dull a ten canal. nee was through Nicaragua because it posed little obstacles due to the fact that most of it crossed a large lake.
The other was through Panama and this route was shorter but was filled with swamps and mountains which made the work load more difficult. The decision was Panama because in 1800 the French tried to do the same thing but after ten years they gave up. The French sold their left over route to the United States for $40 million. Even though the location for the canal was official the United States need o get approval from Columbia because they, at the time, ruled Panama. The United States signed a treaty with Panama where they would pay Panama $10 million and an annual rent fee of $250,000 for an area called the Canal Zone. The construction of the canal began in 1904 and ended ten years later in 1914.
In 1913 the Panama Canal was at its height in construction. More than 43,400 people were employed to work on the canal. Three quarters of the employees were Blacks from the British West Indies and some where even from Italy and Spain. During construction many workers died from diseases such as malaria and yellow fever and accidents.By the end of construction a total of 5,600 workers died from these causes.
The Panama Canal opened on August 15, 1914. It was the greatest engineering feat for the world. However, U. S relations with Latin countries were damaged even though the U.
S gave Colombia $25 million in 1921 to compensate for the loss of their territory. Some pros of the Spanish-American war were that Cuba was set free from Spanish control and the United States was able to gain more territory. Some cons of the Spanish-American war included the fact that many rebelled against American rule such as the Philippines. Some pros of the Panama Canal included the expanding of trade for all countries and ability to have a shortcut between the Atlantic and Pacific Corners.
Some cons of the Panama Canal were that our support of the Panama rebellion and the construction of the canal, slightly damaged our relations with Central America. I believe that both these are Justified. We went to war with Spain to help a nation in need and that is what we did. The construction of the Panama Canal is Justified because it was a benefit for all. All in all these two events helped out nation became what it is today, the most powerful nation in the world.
