Immigration is a sensitive topic with different point of views ranging from letting everyone in to letting absolutely no one in. Our country is in a fragile state with the current economic downturn we are in we need a new immigration policy now before everything gets out of hand. There are three major things we need to change in our policy: reduce the number of visas awarded annually, expand foreign aid and trade benefits to help governments in developing countries strengthen their economies, and finally introduce a national identity card that all workers must present when applying for employment and social services. The first step in Immigration reform is to limit the number of visas that we issue to immigrants to about 600,000 which will nearly shrink the current number of about 1. 1 million in half.
The reason to do this will it forces talented citizens in developing countries to stay in their respective countries develop further hence reducing immigration into the United States. The only people we should admit are people who are seeking asylum and refugee in the US because of the current situation in their countries. This will allow us to admit people who legitimately can greatly improve their life and will allow the people who are qualified in their countries to stay there and improve their country further. The second step is to expand foreign aid and trade benefits to help governments in developing countries strengthen their economies. This will not only help their economy but it will help the global economy hence improving our economy.
The countries that we help will become good enough for the citizens that they won’t want to leave and that will decrease the number of immigrants coming into the U.S. The citizens of their respective countries won’t need to seek asylum and that will ultimately lead to less poor immigrants in our country that we will have to provide financial aid to hence reducing our countries debt and allowing us to spend more money in the education system and providing more jobs. By improving the state of other countries it will also cause our country to develop further and compete with countries around the world in this global economy.
The final step in immigration reform is to introduce a national identity card that all workers must present when applying for employment and social services. Illegal immigration is a major problem in the country and this will ultimately remove a majority of it. Most illegal immigrants come to the US to search for low wage jobs and then receive financial aid. It's estimated that illegal immigration cost taxpayers about $113 billion a year at the federal level which is about $1,117 annually per native- headed household.By implementing the card it would make it virtually impossible for illegal immigrants to get jobs or apply for financial relief. If the illegal immigrants have no point of coming into the US then they won’t bother doing it because they’ll be in an even worse situation than they were in in their respective country.
This solution provides several of America’s key values. This emphasizes the values of human rights and cooperation because we are helping other countries develop so they can help their people out of poverty so they can live long lives and advance in the world. Also it also stresses national security and stability because we aren’t allowing illegal acts in our country and providing support for legal residents of our country. I think the US should project a caring and thoughtful country that can hold its ground.
My policy shows this because we are supporting other countries in their endeavors but we are still making sure that we take charge by not allowing illegal immigrants to control our economy. I think these values are important because the world is developing and we have the resources to improve struggling countries while improving our lives here in America at the same time.If someone were to have a problem with my policy they wouldn’t like the idea of shutting off illegal immigration and allowing fewer immigrants into the US. They would have a problem because they feel that our country should be open to all and that we should allow almost everyone in because we can. In reality we can’t allow every single person who wants to come her to because our economy is hurting as it is and that we can support that many people.
We can’t allow illegal immigrants because it’s simply against the law just like how murder is and that is the only way to terminate it without resorting to violence. To conclude, the three steps we need to take in order to limit immigration into the US is to reduce the number of visas awarded annually, expand foreign aid and trade benefits to help governments in developing countries strengthen their economies, and finally introduce a national identity card that all workers must present when applying for employment and social services.By doing these things we improve the life in other countries and improve the life in the US all at the same time. These promote the key values in American society of safety, stability, human rights, and cooperation. In order for our global economy to surge forward we have to work with countries and people to improve the average lifestyle of people around the world.
