A universal symbol that people in all time and cultures would understand. Given to us by Carl Jung.
When characters in a story represent ideas or emotions, the author has turned the story into an ALLEGORY.
English Colonists see village of Merry Mount as a Garden of Eden, no work all play. High treason to be unhappy in Merry Mount.
Colonists danced around Maypole all SEASONS. From Demeter & Persephone: cycle: autumn- death, winter- waiting, spring- rebirth, summer- growing.
Edgar and Edith getting married.
Cutting down of the Maypole.
Endicott gives them a second chance to become part of his community.
Symbol of life. Maypole is a slender pine tree. Destruction is a symbol of death, death of a life that colonists knew.
7 Colors represent bridge between heaven and earth. 4 + 3 = 7. 3 is the number of God, 4 is the number of humanity ( 4 limbs). Colors on rainbow.
Circle and Wreath
No beginning and no end. Dancing circle broken by Endicott. Wreath put around Edgar and Edith by Endicott represents new life.
Windows to the soul. Colonists play "blind man's buff" with a blindfold representing, in their innocence, they can only see what is fun and childish, not what the responsibilities are.
Strength and power. Puritans cut Edgar's hair before he can go into the Puritan community. Edgar must sacrifice what he knew in Merry Mount.
The mask that we show to the world to conceal our true feelings. Colonists pretend to be happy all the time because it's better than being sad, but it also prevented them from facing growing up and responsibilities.
Some colonists actually wear masks during the wedding.
Growth. Forest, a place of both sheltering and initiation and testing is green.
Unknown. Puritans dressed in black. Hawthorne calls them "black shadows".
Connection to Blood. Royalty and Sacrifice. Edgar is dressed in purple.
Gold (Golden and Gilded)
Immortality. Edgar carries a golden staff.
Lawless and Child-like state that aims to please self without and thought of right or wrong.
Regulation agent that strives for balance between the Id and Superego. (harmony: some work, some play.)
Seeks perfection, restricts morals, creates sense of guilt, want us to be angels.
Created Id, Ego, and Superego.
