“You don't start out writing good stuff. You start out writing crap and thinking it's good stuff, and then gradually you get better at it. That's why I say one of the most valuable traits is persistence.”
― Octavia E. Butler
Any text, whether it is a thesis, article or essay, should have a clear structure. In comparison with other student assignments, a short essay allows to be as creative as you want. Yet, we all know the more freedom we have, the more responsible we become. By receiving this freedom, you must think over the structure of the essay yourself. The structure largely depends on the goals as well as on the form and the type of the essay. The narrative essay usually begins with a status quo; an illustration essay starts with one or several theses and short argumentative essay has to be built in accordance with the laws of logic.
You should know the type of the short essay that is assigned to you. This will help you to write your essay appropriately.
What Is a Short Essay?
A short essay is a typical essay, slightly reduced in its size. You may ask: “How long is a short essay?” It can be half a page long. If you have no idea how to start writing, take a sheet of paper and sketch an outline. The plan is the "skeleton" of the text, to which you will subsequently build up the "flesh." Writing a short essay is a thought-provoking assignment, so you must know all the rules and follow the structure format.
Short Essay Format
Any written work has an introduction. The first paragraph of the text tells a reader about the issue to which the essay is devoted. You don’t have to write a long introduction, a few sentences are more than enough. The thesis is the key part of an essay, and it should find a place in the introduction. The thesis is a short opinion that the author wants to convey to the reader. In the short essay, the thesis should appear in the first or second sentence. The thesis must be impressive and provoking. The smaller your essay is, the less time there is for irrelevant information. You must go straight to the chase.
The main body requires the most attention. Especially when making a plan. It can have a different structure, depending on the length of your essay. The process of the short essay writing consists of including facts, arguments, supporting evidence, and viewpoints on the subject into the text. You must use facts arguments to prove the thesis. It can be a situation from life, news, or a scientific theory.
Main body should have a logical structure. It is important. You can go from simple to complex, you can apply analysis or synthesis, deduction or induction. To build a logical text, you must choose several arguments and line up everything in a logical sequence. One thought must be drawn from another. Before you start working on the text, check whether the theses are arranged in a logical sequence and whether the evidence is convincing enough. Ideally, a thesis should be confirmed by one argument. By using only one argument, you may not convince the reader; three arguments may overload the text. However, you are free to use any number of arguments, as it largely depends on your opinion, the logic of the narrative, and the size of a text.
The best way to write supporting evidence is to fit them into one sentence. It may be difficult, but you can omit some facts or jokes that make your story long and don’t provide necessary proof. You have to think of a topic that is hard to prove.
Your point of view is as important as thesis and argumentation. Only by seeing your introspection, will the college admissions officers be able to understand how well you think critically and how well you can present an argument.
Let’s talk about the conclusion. In summary, you must recap vital points that were mentioned in the essay. It is important that the conclusion does not arise out of anywhere. Just put the main idea you have said before.
Now, when you have a plan, start writing. Begin with the main body of the text. Introduction and conclusion are easier to complete after you make sure that the basis of your essay is logical and understandable to the reader. If you took care of the detailed plan, you would succeed in writing.
