In today’s society Americans have several core values. Three of them are freedom, honesty, and religion.

People value the freedom we have in America people value honesty in other individuals, and people value the right to have whichever religion you believe in. In the crucible Proctor valued honesty and religion as did most of the town’s people. When the witch crafting was in full bloom many people were lying though to save their lives, except one individual who would not speak a word and since no mishap came from his mouth he was able to at least die and stay in his religion class. As to where Proctor was about to lie to save his life he found it best to speak the truth and die under the oath of his religion.

“How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul. Leave me my name!... Proctor tears the paper and crumples it.

” (crucible62) Proctor took his life in honesty for his religion to stay a clean Christian man. Although honesty went hand in hand many people were disloyal towards the value in the end many people turned to lying in order to be saved from death. Many would lie and state they saw so and so with the devil and then it became in demand and people kept stating people with the devil whom they were not keen to. So people would be dishonest in order to gain another value, freedom. “You have confessed yourself to witchcraft, and that speaks a wish to come to heavens side.

And we will bless you Tituba. ” (crucible24) They would confess their souls to god saying they want to be cleaned in order to be saved from the rope.We have men sold to build churches, women sold to support the gospel, and babes sold to purchase Bibles for the poor heathen, all for the glory of God and the good of souls. The slave auctioneer's bell and the church-going bell chime in with each other, and the bitter cries of the heart-broken slave are drowned in the religious shouts of his pious master. Revivals of religion and revivals in the slave trade go hand in hand. ” (f.

d) although honesty and religion were able to messed with.Slavery in the past had no rights to have a freedom, rights to have a religion. The white masters had total control over them; they were not honest in doing so to religion selling people off to better their churches. Other powers were in demand were power, money, control, greed and much more.

So other values canceled out other values at times. “I speak advisedly when I say this—that killing a slave, or any other colored person in Talbot County, Maryland, is not treated as a crime, either by the courts or the community” (f. d26).
