The Monkey King
The main character of the first story line in the book. The Monkey King is originally a character from an ancient Chinese legend who wants to fit in with the gods.
Tze-Yo-Tzuh
The creator, who tells the Monkey King that he is perfect just as he is- just as he created him
Wong Lai-Tsao
A monk who takes the Monkey king as his disciple for a journey on which tze-yo-tzuh sent hime
Jin
The main character of the second story line.; Jin's parents are immigrants who met in San Francisco. Jin was born in the United States. In the course of the graphic novel, Jin gets several years older. During most of the action of the book, Jin wants to fit in with his classmates, both because fitting in will make his life easier, and becuase he has a crush on his classmate Amelia.
Wei-Chen
Jin's best friend, who is from Honk Kong. Wei-Chen doesn't worry as mch about fitting in, bet he does follow Jin's lead in various ways, such as lying for Jin and dating Suzy Nakamura after Jintells him it's allright to date in the US.
Amelia
The classmate on whom Jin has a crush. with Wei-Chen's encouragement, Jin asks her on a date; they go and have a good time.
Greg
Another classmate. When Jin first arrives at the new school, greg seems to be sympathetic to him. Later, Though, he asks Jin not to date Amelia because he's concerned about her reputation if she dates Jin.
Danny
The main character of the third story line. Blonde and white, Danny seems like the typical AMerican teenage. Just like Jin, he wants to fit in.
Chin-Kee
Danny's cousin from China, he seems to embody all of the negagtive stereotypes about chinese americans that Jin and wei-chen have encountered in their story line.
Melanie
One of Danny's friends. he wants to date her, but she wants to remain friends. danny thinks this is because of Chinkee's behavoir, though Melanie says it isn't. Melanie looks a lot like Amelia, and their names have many of the same letters.
Steve
Danny's friend from the basketball team. At first, Steve tells Danny that Chin-Kee's behavior won't change anything between them, but later he is put off by a nasty trick Chin-Kee plays on him.
